Hosana “Fifie” Pierre was born in the small Haitian town of Les Cayes on April 17, 1914 and passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of June 27, 2020. Ms. Pierre was a seamstress, French teacher and an Au Pair. After a time in Les Cayes, she moved to Port-Au-Prince to live, and it was there that she met the Roy family and became a care giver for many of the Roy grandchildren including Elizabeth and Rona Roy and a seamstress with Chenet & Jeannot Embroidery.
In December of 1967, Hosana moved to Ohio to become the Au Pair for Elizabeth Roy Ott and the Ott family. At that time, there were four children that over the years grew to a total of 8. Fifie affectionately called them Ti-Bobette, Ti-Jackie, Ti-Joe, Ti-tie, Ti-Francoise, Ti-Baboo (aka Baca), Eereka, and Pastor. Ms. Pierre became the second mom to all 8 children and attempted to teach them all some French, some Haitian creole and a love of Haitian cuisine. Haitian rice and beans were a staple at dinner almost every evening and have remained a family favorite to this day.
In a very short time, Hosana became a member of the Ott Family. When The Ott brood relocated from Ohio to Texas, Ms. Pierre initially moved to New York City to be with cousins. Fifie missed the family of 10 so much that she eventually moved to the Rio Grand Valley and then Austin with the family. Always a fixture at the large, Ott family gatherings, Hosana could be found either in the kitchen helping prepare meals or holding kids of the 8 siblings as they started having children of her own.
Ms. Pierre had a heart of gold as well as a love and smile for all that she would meet. As she aged, some health issues warranted the need for a nursing home. Almost as soon as she arrived at the nursing home, Hosana became the love of all who cared for her as well as other residents. In the last home she lived, it was no surprise that she was the Princess of Valentine’s Day, and her birthday every year was celebrated by all residents and nurses.
She will be remembered for her love of cooking, her amazing sewing skills, one of the biggest hearts of any human being and one of her favorite songs, “Let My Love Open the Door” by Pete Townsend. She and Momma & Dad Ott are now together again, laughing and watching over all those they love.
Hosana is preceded in death by Elizabeth R. Ott and Robert J. Ott and survived by the Ott children including Elizabeth Apt, Jackie Shepherd-Pettis, Joe Ott, Theresa Boisseau, Fran O’Donnell, Robert Ott, Erica Crist and Chris Ott as well as numerous Ott grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, friends and neighbors.
