

Jack was born on October, 23, 1929 to Blanche and John M. Mathis in Brenham, Tx. He was the youngest of three boys. All of who preceded him in death.
Jack’s early life was spent in Brenham and Houston, Tx. He attended Texas Military Institute in San Antonio. After graduation, he enrolled at the University of Texas. Jack was a loyal Longhorn fan for his entire life.
As a young man Jack spent time at his Uncle John’s ranch in Jacksboro, Texas. Uncle John and Aunt Florence provided the foundation for much of his work ethic and morals.
After graduation at UT, Jack worked as a salesman for the American Tobacco company. He took a part time job hauling bags of cement when he met Frank Holloway. Jack worked for Mr. Holloway for several years at The Holloway Company in Austin prior to buying the company in 1966 and becoming CEO.
Jack sold The Holloway Company in the late 70’s and retired to a career in ranching in Brackettville, Tx. Jack and
Sharon returned home to the Brenham area and eventually they settled in at Lake Buchanan. During this period Jack came out of retirement and spent many happy years employed by TXDOT in security. This job and the friends he met on a daily basis made it easy for him to make the daily 2-1/2 hour round trip from the lake into downtown Austin. TXDOT was an integral part of his life until he retired in 2011.
Jack was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He also served in the US National Guard.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sharon; his children - Jack and Cheryl Mathis; Marion and Kenny Robertson; Ann and Steve Baker; Mary Holt; Dwayne Mathis and Jacquelyn Mathis. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Family was important to Jack wherever he was. He had many close business associates and friends who became part of his family.
