

He was born in Hayden, Arizona on November 16, 1930 to loving parents William (Skinner) Matern and
Mary Evelyn McGovern Matern. He grew up in the small community of Fairland, TX.
Bill was a 1947 graduate of Marble Falls High School where he excelled as an athlete. He was awarded
a football scholarship to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. He completed a bachelor’s degree
from TCU in 1955. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. While on
furlough, Bill met and fell in love with Anna Ruth Baker of Bertram, Texas. They were married on July 27, 1953.
He taught in the Austin Independent School District until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, he
returned to his family’s ranch that he loved, in Fairland. He has been ranching since 1959 and continued
until the last few years of his life. Bill was blessed with many lifelong friends.
Bill is survived by his children, Frauna (Randy-deceased) Thompson of Marble Falls, TX
and William (Jo) Matern III of Austin, TX: grandchildren; Buster Thompson, Jacob Thompson, Bonnie
Thompson and several great grandchildren; and extended family members.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife Anna.
Graveside service was held Tuesday April 5, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Fairland Cemetery.
