Betty was born on January 10, 1942, to Ellen and John Waters, proud Irish immigrants, who instilled in her a deep appreciation for their Catholic faith, family, and hard work. As a first generation American, Betty carried forward her parents’ legacy with grace and devotion throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her son, Zachary; and beloved husband, Gene Roys, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and partnership as they raised a beautiful family.
Betty was a devoted mother to six children – John Roys (Sue), Pat Roys (Laura), Mary Boswell (John), Roberta (Kevin), Katie Roys, and Michael Roys (Jeannine). She was also a proud and loving grandmother to Kelsey, Taylor, Victoria, Faith, Jack, Ben, and Jimmy, who brought her immense joy and pride.
Drawing from her lifelong Catholic faith, Betty was a dedicated and compassionate registered nurse who served the Grand Rapids community in a variety of roles throughout her career. Her work reflected her natural kindness, steady strength, and unwavering commitment to caring for others.
Outside of her profession, Betty had a lively spirit and a love for the simple joys in life. She especially loved family gatherings and cherished time spent with those she loved. She enjoyed shopping and took particular delight in collecting purses, coats, and shoes–always with an eye for style and a smile to match.
Betty will be remembered for her warmth, her resilience, her sense of humor (even though when you told her a joke she usually didn’t get it), and the deep love she had for her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the people she helped heal, and the family she cherished.
