Harley Jack Derks went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, May 21, 2025, at the age of 83. He was born September 8, 1941, to Henry and Jane Derks. Harley was born at home in Byron Center, Michigan, and spent his entire life in the community he loved. A proud member of the Michigan National Guard, Harley served his state with dedication and honor.
He built a career at Steelcase, where he was known for his hard work and commitment. Outside of work, Harley cherished time with his family. He found great joy in spending time at Silver Lake, watching football, Red Wings hockey, and traveling—especially on cruises and visits to Texas. Above all, he cherished watching his children and grandchildren grow, and his heart was full when surrounded by family. Whether it was playing games or watching sports together, those moments brought him the greatest joy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty (Bobeldyk) Derks; children Cheryl and Kraig Kruithof, Lori and Scott Wall, and Brian and Rose Derks. He is also survived by his grandchildren Danielle and Shawn Gorman, Mitchell VanEss, Deanna and Adam Huisman, Jennifer Wall, Jason Wall, and Grace and Brandon VanHees; as well as beloved great-grandchildren who light up his life. Harley is also survived by his siblings Judy and John Van Loo, Jim and Hilda Derks; in-laws Robert Jonker, Jim and Mindy Bobeldyk, Colleen Van Ocker, Sue Willard; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Jane Derks; mother- and fathers-in-law June and Bernard Heslinga and Walter Bobeldyk; and sister-in-law, Gloria Jonker.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but we rejoice knowing that he is now at peace in the presence of his Savior.
Funeral services and visitation will be held at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th Street SW, Byron Center, Michigan. Family and friends are invited to visit from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2025. The funeral service will take place the following day 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2025, with additional visitation beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Dr. David Murray will be officiating. Interment will follow at Winchester Cemetery.
