James “Jim” Keith Gilbert, age 85 of Hastings, passed away peacefully at his home on May 13, 2026. Born July 10, 1940, in Byron Center, Michigan, Jim lived a life marked by service, devotion, and love.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1964, stationed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and also spending 18 months stationed in Japan. After returning home, he continued his commitment to public service as a member of the Grand Rapids Police Department, where he was honored for saving the life of an infant—an act that remained one of his proudest accomplishments. He later worked for 26 years at General Motors, earning the respect of colleagues through his steady work ethic and unwavering integrity.
Family was the center of Jim’s world. He was deeply proud of his sons James (Amanda) and Jeffery (Diane); and he cherished his grandchildren Sydney (Will) Haase, Kensey (Fieke) Gilbert, James Ryan Gilbert, Chamus (Justina) Gilbert, Makyre Gilbert, Raston Gilbert, Tekoah Gilbert, and Catarina Gilbert. His joy extended to his great-grandchildren Sebastian Gilbert and Oliver Gilbert, who brought him endless delight.
Jim shared a lifetime of love with his beloved wife, Kathleen Elaine (Kowalski) Gilbert, until her passing in 2013. He was also preceded in death by his parents Ivan Gilbert and Lucille (Ide) Gilbert, whose guidance shaped the man he became.
Golf was one of Jim’s greatest lifelong passions. He spent countless hours at Saskatoon and Gun Ridge Golf Course—places that felt like home and where he formed lasting friendships. He also had a deep love for dogs. Cheetie, his faithful companion, accompanied Jim and Kathleen everywhere and remained a treasured part of their life together. After Cheetie passed, Jim welcomed Skor, a rescue who brought renewed joy, comfort, and companionship into his later years.
He was a lifelong fan of Detroit sports—especially the Tigers and Lions—and his enthusiasm for the game and his teams was a constant source of connection and conversation with those around him.
Jim’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service 1 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Cook Funeral Home - Byron Center Chapel, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315, with visitation one hour prior. Jim will be laid to rest at Winegar Cemetery in Byron Center. The service will be led by Reverend Dan Beyer and Reverend Jeff Gilbert. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of a man whose life was defined by service, love, and devotion.
