Aged 85, of Cambridge Ontario, passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Place on Sunday evening, June 12th. Born in Galt Ontario in 1926, Dave was an accomplished athlete as a youth, excelling at baseball and basketball. Dave started his career in Detroit where he was a cub reporter for a Detroit newspaper. Returning to Ontario, he hired on at Carling Breweries as their Toronto region Sales Rep. Following a very long, distinguished and successful career with Carling, Dave retired to devote even more energy to his passion for golf. A long time member of Islington Golf & Country Club in Toronto, he was club captain many times there and a legend at the Gin Rummy table. Later, he heard the call of home and returned to Galt (now Cambridge) to live close to his extensive extended family and the home he was born in. This rekindled many old friendships and reconnections to family. He is survived by his four children: Stuart, Jane, Grant and Krista; and, his four grandchildren: Alex, Ian, Marla and Kennetch. He was predeceased by his four older siblings: George, Mary, Ella and Jessie. Of his many nieces and nephews, Dave was closest to his two nieces Bonnie and Heather, daughters of Jessie and Sid Ford. They both devoted much energy and love to ensuring he was included in family events and all major holidays. It was a great source of happiness for him that they kept him part of their families in his later years. Heartfelt thanks to all the staff and residents of St. Luke’s Place who made his last two years much easier and who eased his discomfort in his final hours.
Visitation will be held Friday June 17th starting at noon at Coutts Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 96 St. Andrew Street, Cambridge followed by a memorial service in the chapel of the funeral home at 2 p.m.. . In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Luke’s Place would be most appreciated.
