How time flies:(  It seems like only yesterday, you, Diane and myself spent our afternoons enjoying the sun on the deck on Bell Island.  Today feels like one of those days/ the sun is shining and there is just a whisper of wind.  I imagine today you would be on the lawn mover wearing your straw hat and repainting the fence while Diane and myself laughingly tell you “you missed a spot” and you call out to us to move the paint can so you can continue painting.    While the world around us was upended dealing with Covid, the deck on Dickie’s house was a peaceful sanctuary where our biggest concerns were  what would be for supper, whether we were going to sit on the shade or swing in the sun and when we’re we going to go for a drive to get ice cream.  Your last summer on Bell Island was one of the best summers of my life: family, history lessons, lots of fried fish, laughs on the deck!  You are always missed and will never be forgotten.  Love you Uncle Dickie 🥰

Dick had a  way about him. You came to the store & a woman would be misses. Always good humor & a smile. He took care of you from the time you entered the store until you left. My parents Victor & Marie Hammond taught the world of him . Their will never be anyone as good as he is.

We had a few dealings with Stoyles catering over the year like our wedding  then our 25 th wedding anniversary my moms 80th birthday and if you were around in 4 years  our 50th would have been catered by the best again. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all especially since we couldn't be there in person to say goodbye.  May all the precious memories of his life help you all through this difficult time.  Let all the tears of love flow as you recall special moments and occasions and may they help ease the pain and bring a smile to your faces.  He was a people person and took time to greet and converse with them. At family gatherings his boisterous laughter could be heard above others. He had a powerful presence, selfless, never ever knowing his own pain but rather concentrating on others,  and and their needs.  May you all find the strength needed, with the help of family members and friends, to heal when ready. The world is a better place because of him.  He worked hard each and everyday and the fruits of his labor could be seen in the community, and all those who knew him.  He loved his family above all and Bell Island.  This was to be his last journey.  The only thing missing was the plane ride which he didn't have to endure.  Rest in peace Dick, we will be together soon, speaking your name but missing your smile and laughter. Once again the family chain has been broken and the heart will only heal when we all unite again.

I would like to say Stoyles was a great place for me to visit with my dad. My family is originally from Deer Lake NL. So the comfort in listing to Mr. Stoyles talk when we visited was the greatest. I really wish I could remember the story he told me about a rabbit one time I was there as a child. I continued to shop there until we moved to NL 2 years ago.
May you all find comfort in knowing he was an amazing man too so many.

Our family memories of Dick are too many to put  on paper.  He and our Dad,  Abbie were the greatest of buddies.  You never knew what they would get up to next.   The great times at the Newfie Club and so many visits to the store.  Abbie's many runs to Windsor with salt beef and many other Newfie foods.  No money ever chanced hands until Abbie returned after selling everything.   Friendship was very important to them both and loyalty.  We'd like to send our condolences to Diane and the entire family with Dick's passing.

Sincere condolences to the entire Stoyles family.  I remember meeting Dick when I was only 12 years old, he asked my dad, "who is this young man". Then again at 19 (maybe 18 LOL),at the Newfie Club,  he still remembered who I was and took the time to chat with me, asking how I was and how my parents were. Then at 34 I moved to Cambridge and couldn't wait to go to Stoyles Fish & Chips to see him again. He never forgot who I was. He was the warmest, gentlest, caring man, always smiling and happy to see you. He was a great man to emulate.

there has never been a time in my life when Uncle Dick was never close by, our two families have always been close.  From the garden party at the very first Newfoundland Club in the old homeware building on Dundas st, to watching Dad and Uncle Dick paint  the Cambridge Newfoundland club white in the powder blue truck or the Christmas suppers at Uncle Dicks or sitting on crates of Pop Shoppe minis for the Caribou club.  So it was only fitting  when I got my first job it would be with the Catering (right of passage for family) at $2.15 an hour, to working the canteen at the Club then onto the store.  Christmas in the store was fun, I recall having drinks with customers on Christmas Eve. You never really got to leave the family business, you just got missed in the call but you were always there if need be.  You were only a phone call away if we ever needed anything. I enjoyed watching Aunt Nell call you Richard, she was the only person I knew who ever called you that.  You there to hold our hands while Dad was sick and gathered the uncles. Between you and Dad, you both taught us family is important and to help when you can.  

I am sure that you and Dad are sitting down having a drink and arguing about someone's house or where so and so lived way back when or even what you're going to do next.

I met Dick in 1988 when I was a newspaper man new to Cambridge and a stranger to Newfies.  Such a magnificent resource he would prove to be! He was a reflection of a community that he helped form, and anyone interested in what he was up to was embraced with warmth and gusto. His late brother Greg was also thoroughly a community man, ever welcoming strangers into the midst. I will miss Dick and the many happy interactions with his family whenever I visited their Main Street store. I understand Dick and his charming daughter Diane were hoping to return to Bell Island this summer. I’m so sorry that didn’t transpire. Fair Winds, me boy, Fair Winds.

So very sorry to hear of Dick’s passing, I always enjoyed seeing him whenever our paths crossed, either in Cambridge, Bell Island or Brigus…he would always relay great stories about the past and our families.  I remember him being particularly proud showing me the original butcher block from the shop on Bell Island.  RIP Dick my friend you were one in a million!

Dicky & I shared the same birthday. My cousin Glen lived with us when I was growing up. I can remember Glen taking me to the store many times when he & Diane started dating. Dicky would always greet me with a smile. Always slipped me a candy or two, or sometimes fries & gravy. He always made you feel welcomed. I thought I was a big shot going in this store & the owner knew me by name (wow)... The older I got he would always ask me how my grandparents Mr & Mrs Butt are doing. Or would ask about my mom & dad. I always asked him about his homemade white puddings. Oh my god they were the best I have ever tasted. I will surely miss his fantastic food. But more than anything I will miss the man. R.I.P.

Sorry to hear of Mr Stoyles passing. We met briefly when my wife was in Cambridge Memorial Hospital 2019 recovering from a stroke. He heard my newfie accent and we immediately began chatting. I asked if he owned the fish and chips store in Cambridge and he said yes. My wife and I finally  had a scoff there the year before. His daughter was there visiting him at the hospital and turned out she was friends with my wifes former boss at Zehrs. Dick made you feel welcomed. He will be missed. God Bless.

Saturday mornings at "Stoyle's fish & chips" will never be the same except for the great memories of fun, laughter, jokes & friendship nurtured over the years. Thanks for the memories Dick, Greg & the fine individuals gathered in the back booth. The family is slowly passing. I have many memories of Uncle Dick from the years growing up in Ontario.  We would go to Cambridge almost every week.  We would have Fish and Chips and then we were allowed to go behind the counter to pick a treat.  We spent a lot of time at the Newfie  club, I was probably 10 or 11 the first time I worked behind the bar with Michelle and one of the boys where I learned what a jigger of liquor was!  Lol  oh the times we had those weekends!!

But my favourite memories happened only last year.  I was lucky enough to be able to spend time with him and Diane over the summer.  Just sitting on the front porch, enjoying the sun and having a chat.  Or going for a nightly history lesson about Bell Island as Uncle Dick and Uncle Tom would have lively discussions about the good old days.

I was hoping to have another summer with him this year:(  But he is in a better place now - spending time with family and friends.  I imagine he is the center  of attention as he was always the Center of our family.

Dick was the most generous, kind hearted person I ever met!  I will never forget his generosity when my dad died.  Daddy died on the same day as my daughter was married, Dec. 29, 1989.  He catered the wedding.  At the end of the meal, one of the caterers approached me & said, “ Dick says to leave everything with you! That you will have family coming from all over.” Up to that point I didn’t know that anyone knew of Dad passing....but somehow he was aware.  He helped me so many times when I was planning events for our social club.  I refer to Dick as the “ Father of Newfoundland !”  We were “displaced” & he  gathered us all together in Ontario!  May he R I P. 🙏

My heart is hurting today.  My heartfelt condolences to Diane, Michelle, Rick and Sean, along with their spouses, children and grandchildren.

Dick Stoyles gave me my first real job in Oct 1986 working in his catering company.  Two years later I began my long employment in the store.  So many memories, both good and bad, sometimes happy and sometimes sad.  I left Stoyles in June 2005 but continued to go back and help prep for Easter week and the craziness of Good Friday.
He was so supportive when my son was born in 1991, and was accomadating when there were school functions or sports events on days I was scheduled to work.  When my father passed in 2010 the Stoyles family showed my family support.  
From advise to love,  Dick Stoyles was like a father/grandfather to me.  I love him dearly and I know I will miss him.  
I am so glad I got to see him on May 1st,  the last day Stoyles Food Mart was open.

I remember growing up on Bell island my Mom and Dad went every Saturday to his meat store to buy our meats for the week, he was always a pleasant man, friendly and cared about his customer's,  I  as well lived in Cambridge for a number of years and visited his store quite often, especially for chips, dressing and gravy... Mr. Dick Stoyles you are gone but will never be forgotten,,   RIP and Soar with the Angels.. 

RIP Dick Stoyles.  I was always grateful to you for my job working with your catering business. Your kindness was always shown to me.  I loved going into the store and you would always come out and say " Hello Pats." Heaven gained another great one today.  All my love to the family. 

My Parents Ron and Judy Wilson are both deceased now, but told stories of their meeting Mr. Dick Stoyles when they happened to newlyweds in 1966 and dropped into his store.  Mr. Stoyles was a wonderful friend,  so kind, trusting and understanding that because my mother had only a small amount of money at the time just moving from St.John’s a couple of weeks previously and now a newlywed,  he would run tic for her until payday.  
Mr. Stoyles never forgot my Parents over the years  nor did they, and it was wonderful to always be called by name going in myself as I grew up.

I never met Dick but I certainly know his name and the reputation he had of being such a pillar in the Cambridge community and of bringing the Newfoundland culture and way of life (thankfully) to Cambridge. He was loved by many and will be missed but never forgotten 


I have so many good memories in the store with my dad. Then when I was old enough I started catering.  When it was my turn to get married it was Diane who was my deciding factor for the date for my wedding because I was not having a wedding that they could not cater. I loved your food so much and you will be deeply missed.

I had just moved to Cambridge (1989) and started school. My grandpa took me to Stoyles Fish & Chips at lunchtime, where I had my first ever snowball (melted marshmallow covered in chocolate and shredded coconut). Homemade, absolute heaven. Mr. Stoyles and Grandpa chatted about fish, fishing, and Cambridge in general.

Mr. Stoyles always had a smile and a snowball or two tucked away form me whenever I visited (daily for quite a while!), and always had a few minutes to chat with Grandpa whenever he stopped in.

I will always remember him as a lovely & jovial fellow with a kind word and a smile for everyone. 

I remember Dick as far back as the founding of the then {Galt} Newfoundland Club. My father Hubert and he were friends. His catering services were second to none. I shopped and ate fish & chips at his store many times., over the years. Wonderful man, RIP my friend.  

My favorite fish and chip place. Was so sad to hear he had passed on. I would see Dick now and then and the usual employees. RIP Dick. My condolences to his family.

Mr. Stoyles was a very generous man,  he hired me to help cater. It really was nice to work with the group. He was such a very hard worker! It was a privilege to know him. My sincere deepest condolences to the Stoyles family.

Dick (Mr. Stoyles) was my first employer at 14 years of age in his catering business and later cater our wedding in 1988. My Dad Colin was one of Dicks best friends and spend many Saturdays cooking fish and chips with Dick. Mr. S you will be truly missed, God speed!

I have precious memories of Dick's generous hospitality and warm friendship when my late husband and I visited him and his wonderful family in his Newfoundland home. We couldn't have been more welcomed.

My heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends on this big loss.
