Syd Harrickey

Syd was born in Liverpool, UK on March 24, 1936, the middle child, with his adored older sister, Josie King, and baby brother, John Harrickey. It was in his late teens that he met his beloved Patsy Doyle, whom he went on to marry. Never were two souls meant to be together, theirs was a true love story. Syd was a very fashionable fellow and often recanted how he “never bought a suit of the peg” until he had children (six of them!). He was a true “Teddy Boy"!

Syd was an industrious worker, becoming a millwright. He worked hard to provide for his large brood, including family excursions - weekends in the Lake District, summer holidays in Cornwall. Many a weekend was spent in Wem, Shropshire, where Syd and Pat made many local friends. Their light shone bright and people naturally gravitated to them. Syd had a formidable wit and charm, was warm and kind, and had a talent for creating easy conversation, immediately putting people at ease. This, coupled with Pat’s sparkling smile that would light up the room, made them popular amongst friends.

Family defined Syd and he often said, “work to live, don’t live to work.” He was a staunch supporter of his children and valued time with them above all else. Syd and Pat were never happier than when they were surrounded by their children, their children’s significant others, as well as their children’s friends. Everyone knew they were welcome at Syd and Pat’s house where a good time was always had by all - they loved a full house! Holidays were always celebrated - the annual Christmas Eve party, “Nana’s” famous annual Halloween Party, Thanksgiving dinners!! Syd and Pat were even happier when 15 grandchildren and 11 great children followed, always jumping at the chance to babysit (except those times when Pat wanted to go out and join in the fun, though she always obliged!!). Syd loved fiercely!

Syd’s work took him all over the UK, including time in South Africa. He came to Canada in March 1982, following his two eldest sons who had emigrated a year earlier, wanting to keep everyone together. Here, he settled in Cambridge and before long, he and Pat made new friends, with Syd continuing his involvement with the R.A.O.B and Masons.

Syd was also a life longer learner and valued education above all else, and always encouraged his children in their endeavours. He was always well versed in current affairs and had a particular passion for WW2. He liked nothing better than a good conversation or debate over a pint.

His wit was unrivalled and his stories, especially those of his childhood back in Liverpool, were always entertaining. Many who met him described Syd as a true gentleman, which he was until the very end, always worrying about others before himself.

Passed away peacefully at home on May 4th, 2022 surrounded by “his girls” - daughter, Elizabeth and granddaughters, Britany and Victoria.

Syd was born in Liverpool, England and was a life long learner who enjoyed a good chat over a pint.

Syd is predeceased by his soulmate and wife, Pat, and is survived by his six children, Syd (Pat), Stephen (Joan), John (Cindy), Elizabeth, Patricia (Gabe) and Mike (Denise), his 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and his beloved siblings, Josie and John.

A visitation for Syd will be held on Monday, May 9, 2022 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge, ON N1S1M8 (519-621-1650). A Funeral Mass will occur on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Clements Parish, 745 Duke St., Cambridge, ON. Interment will follow at Parklawn Cemetery, Cambridge.
