Iney R. Won, M.D., age 93, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, surrounded by loving family members. Born on November 25, 1931 in Seoul, South Korea, Iney was the second of seven children and the oldest of six daughters. In her early years, she lived in Seoul under Japanese occupation until it ended in 1945. Iney went to medical school at a time few women became physicians, graduating in 1959 from Sudo Women’s Medical College, now Korea University, as a pediatrician. While in medical school, she met Kwan H. Won, a medical student at Seoul National University. They married on October 9, 1958, and Mrs. Won followed her husband to the United States in 1962. They went on to have four children, who they raised first in Camp Hill and then in Mechanicsburg.
To all who knew her, Iney was kind, generous, and empathetic, often putting the needs of others ahead of her own. She highly valued education and scholarship, and despite her low vision, she raised her four children with determination and vigor. She never allowed them or herself to cut corners.
Iney was both fierce and humble. Always elegant, she dressed stylishly and arrived at events
perfectly turned out. She loved cooking and food and would often try new recipes for parties,
whether new holiday cookies, American classics, Eastern European desserts, or Korean
favorites. She filled her house with books and was always ready for adventure. That included
accompanying her children on the biggest rollercoasters at Hershey Park, trying a skiing lesson, or fitting in yoga classes. Many admired Iney’s disciplined approach to staying fit. Her family members recall her love of walking, calisthenics, and fresh air.
Iney and her husband Kwan enjoyed traveling around the world. They also supported numerous organizations through the years, including their church, Food Bank of Pennsylvania, Disabled American Veterans, the Metropolitan Opera, the Harrisburg Symphony, and schools including
Phillips Academy, St. Paul’s School, and Johns Hopkins Medical School. She loved to laugh and was known for her wry sense of humor, present in every conversation. In her last days when words came with difficulty, one of her daughters commented that she was so beautiful, and she uttered a single word with her characteristic wit, “yesterday.”
Iney is survived by her loving husband Kwan Won, M.D.; her children and their partners, Hoon and Celeste Won, Mimi and Warren Techentin, Julie Won and Wooksang Roh, and Daniel Won and Lisa Remlinger; and six grandchildren, Ainsley Roh, Nicholas Won, Adelaide Won, Nathaniel Won, Larkin Techentin, and Remick Techentin. She also is survived by her older brother Nak Won Paik in Korea, and sisters Soo Ja Kim and Nak Kyung Ko in Canada.
Services will be held at Neill Funeral Home; 3401 Market Street, Camp Hill, PA, 17011 on Saturday, May 17, with a public viewing at 9:30a.m. and a service at 10:00, followed by interment at St. John’s Cemetery.
