Our hearts are broken as we announce the passing of our beloved Mum, Gran, Big Sister and Auntie. Anne (Haddock) Beattie who passed, at the age of 90, on September 22 2026, in Campbell River, British Columbia.
Born on September 9th 1936 in Clydebank, Scotland to parents William Haddock and Elizabeth (Montgomery) Haddock. She is the eldest of four girls Maureen, Marcia and Rona.
Mum very much enjoyed her schooling and enjoyed playing grass hockey during that time. As a young adult she moved to Aberdeen, Scotland with her family. It is there she met the man who would become her love and husband Alastair Beattie. One of their favourite activities was going to dances at the Beach Ballroom. They married in 1957 and embarked on a journey to start a life in Vancouver British Columbia. She would, however, keep a very special place in her heart for Scotland. Then, a period of settling in as newlywed's a time forever referred to as “Before Bruce”.
In September 1961 along came bundle of joy number one Bruce then in October 1963 bundle of joy number two Elizabeth (Beth). During a period of time raising her young family Mum started working part time as an office assistant and was very dedicated and reliable in her job.
As the family grew the decision was made to build a new house in the Riverdale area of Richmond B.C. This was a very exciting time for our family, and we moved into our brand-new home in the summer of 1973 and this became the family home for the next 44 years. During this time Mum’s strong work ethic paid off and provided her the opportunity to become the Executive Assistant to Dan Friedmann the VP of Macdonald Detweiler a space technology company. She very much loved her position as Dan’s “right hand woman” and continued to work until she was 76 years old!
After retirement Mum kept connected with a group of ladies “the MDA ladies” and would enjoy monthly lunch meets and occasional adventures where the shenanigans were epic.
Throughout her life Mum was an avid reader. She found immense joy when in the company of the family dogs, especially her beloved Misty. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and collected the completed ones under her bed instead of taking them apart. She did not like to cook however we all would enjoy a very delicious Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner lovingly prepared each and every year. Only once did she forget to turn on the oven a fact which we never let her live down.
Widowed and living alone in the very large Richmond empty nest Mum made the move to a lovely bungalow in Ladner B.C. in 2017. There she would live a comfortable peaceful life enjoying visits with Bruce and Beth and her grandchildren Dylan (b1993) Ryley (b1994) and Austin (b1996). Beth a long-time resident of Vancouver Island and with Bruce moving to the Island in 2026 Mum decided to move to Berwick by the Sea in Campbell River.
While living at Berwick she made many new friends and enjoyed some of the activities provided. Mum also joined “The Friday Night Dinner Club” with Beth and her partner Kevin, in which she enjoyed taking her turn choosing restaurants.
In Lieu of flowers please give to the Covenant House, a charity that was especially important to our Mum.
