With sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Geoffrey Gilbert Scatchard on his 91st birthday at his home in Campbell River, BC. Predeceased by his loving wife and companion Eva, sister Lorraine, and brother Larry, Geoff is remembered with love by many nieces, nephews, extended family across Canada, and by friends and neighbours he gathered over the years.
Geoff was born in Kamloops to Flora (Ferguson) Scatchard and Jack Scatchard. He was the grandson of Dr. Walter Scatchard and Ada Scatchard (Donne), early pioneers of Chase, BC. Raised between Kamloops and Vancouver during the 1930s and 1940s, Geoff grew up alongside his brother Lawrence and sister Lorraine. He became uncle to 8 nieces and nephews, always gathering at Christmas, and many times throughout the year.
Geoff began his long and dedicated career in public service in 1955 with the BC Department of Highways, working on the Squamish–Porteau Cove highway. Over the next decade, he contributed to the development of critical transportation routes across British Columbia—including work on the Yellowhead Highway near Clearwater and Avola, and the Sayward–Port Hardy project during the time of the historic Ripple Rock explosion in 1958. He also worked from Stewart, over Bear Pass, to Meziadin Lk, and on towards Cassier,—often working from remote camps in rugged wilderness. His final position with Dept of Highways was in Victoria BC.
He next took a position with the Municipality of Delta. There, his skills and leadership were recognized as he became Survey Supervisor and eventually Utility Permit Approving Officer. He served with dedication until his retirement.
Geoff was deeply connected to the landscapes he helped shape. He once built a cabin near Lytton with a friend, using recycled materials and a Franklin stove. His family remembers the old Land Rover he would use there. He spent countless days hiking and camping, also canoeing and cross country skiing, around BC. He remained an avid walker until his final days.
Geoff also explored the world when he could, Scotland, England, South Africa. When he met and married Eva, together they hiked the Chilkoot Trail, explored BC, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Alaska in their RV, and traveled—to Mexico, and the Cook Islands. Also cruising the Amazon in Brazil, the Caribbean, and across the Pacific from Australia. They shared a love of nature, adventure, and family.
Geoff was known for his kind spirit, gentle humour, and deep appreciation for the outdoors. He lived a full and meaningful life, from small-town BC roots to work that connected communities across the province, and a retirement filled with adventure and love. His legacy is one of quiet strength, dedicated service, and a life lived in harmony with the natural world he loved so much.
