Bert will be lovingly remembered by his brothers Rudolph (Rudy), and Cornelis (Cees) and his wife Sonya; his children Corrina (Rocky), Kirsten (Don), Joe (Jenna), and Dale (Angie); and his grandchildren Tyler (Jon), Colby (Kayle), Calen (Jade), Cory (Anya), Cameron (Wisdom), Stephanie (Matt), David (Melissa), Michael, and Madalyn.
He was a proud great-grandfather to Charlotte, Olivia, Olive, Heidi, and Adaline, and will also be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Bert was predeceased by his beloved wife Marie, his parents Maartje and Hendrik (Henk) Venekamp, and his brother Cornelis.
Born in Andijk, Netherlands, Bert joined the Dutch military after finishing school. In 1968, he emigrated to Canada by boat, arriving in Montreal and traveling directly to Squamish—drawn by the promise of excellent fishing.
He worked for Can Oxy for many years before moving on to Northern Utilities, where he spent the remainder of his career working at hydroelectric dams in Squamish and the Queen Charlotte Islands, retiring in 2011.
Bert was a hardworking, kind, and gentle soul—always ready to lend a helping hand. His quiet strength, warm heart, and dedication to his family and community will never be forgotten.
He spent his retirement years doing what he loved most—watching the tide roll in and out, side by side with his beloved Marie. Together, they found peace and joy in life’s simple rhythms.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, care aides, and staff at Evergreen Seniors Home for their care and compassion during Bert’s final days.
