Evelyn JoAnn Mackie passed away peacefully on November 14th, 2023 at the age of 92 after weeks of declining health. She was born in Terre Haute, Indiana and later moved to California, after having spent time in Florida and New York. JoAnn is survived by her four loving children, Bruce Mackie II; Laurie Ann (Philip) Tignino; Erin Mackie; Jody (Richard) Cook; three grandchildren, Philip-Michael (Alana) Tignino; Anthony (Taylor) Tignino; Bailey Cook; great-grandchild, Emilia Tignino; sister, Mary Wright (sister, Frances Svihla, preceded her in death in 2020); as well as numerous other relatives, including several nieces and nephews.
JoAnn graduated high school from Garfield High in Terre Haute and later earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana State Teachers College (renamed Indiana State University). While JoAnn worked diligently as an administrative assistant for over 25 years in the aerospace and vocational health industries, her life was devoted to her children: She was a PTA member and frequently baked sugar cookies and cupcakes for classroom holiday parties and bake sales. She dearly loved all her grandsons, whom she spent many a happy hour reading to, playing stuffed animals with, and introducing board games, of which she was especially fond. She enjoyed watching Jeopardy every day, talking on the phone with friends and family, seeing movies, going out to eat, traveling, and listening to her Elvis and John Denver CDs. She also enjoyed her visits home to Terre Haute to see her beloved sisters, niece, nephews, and high school friends.
Supportive of different causes, JoAnn walked door-to-door to raise money for The American Cancer Society in honor of her mother, who had died of breast cancer when JoAnn was a child. JoAnn will be greatly missed and remembered as a wonderful mother and grandmother who was a constant source of love and support, and a genuinely good-hearted, generous, and thoroughly decent human being, who, up until the near end, delighted others with her playful smile, lighthearted laugh, and gentle squeeze of the hand.
