

MAYER, Esther (Issenberg), of Sharon, entered into rest February 21, 2014 at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late Norman Mayer. Devoted mother of Joel and Eliot Mayer. Loving sister of Celia Parker, Ben and David Issenberg. Cherished grandmother of Jennie Fontaine and Sarah Mayer. Loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. Esther was the only member of her family to be born in the US and the first to attend college, graduating from Dorchester HS for Girls in 1939 and Framingham State in 1943, where she was described as "determined, jovial, and spirited." With a major in Nutrition, Esther entered the Beth Israel Hospital internship program and later worked there as a Registered Dietician also at the Faulkner Hospital. A long-time member of the American Dietetic Association, Esther resumed her career after raising two sons and served in a number of area nursing homes until her retirement. Esther and Norman Mayer were married for over 66 years, celebrating their last anniversary at the wedding of their granddaughter Jennie. They were active members of Temple Israel for more than half a century, were avid square dancers, and enjoyed gardening and many summers on Cape Cod. Services at Temple Israel, 125 Pond St, SHARON on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 1 pm. Internment at Sharon Memorial Park. Memorial observance will be held at her home in Sharon following internment until 8 pm, Wednesday 12-4 pm, and Thursday 4-8 pm.
