Beloved wife of Norman H. Berkowitz. Devoted mother of Lisa B. Wilson and her husband Bruce, and Steven Berkowitz and his wife Laureen. Loving sister of Susan, Robert, and the late Dustin. Cherished grandmother of Douglas, Gregory, Alexis, Tess, and Eli.
Joanne was brilliant. She graduated at the top of her class from her nursing program in Greenfield, achieving the highest score on the state board exam. Fellow students turned to her for guidance and mentorship. She moved to Boston to become a psychiatric nurse and met her future husband, Norman, while treating a patient. Together, they began a family whose home was a warm refuge or anyone who needed support. For over forty years, Joanne hosted Christmas and Passover. She savored summers, especially in Maine and Vermont. She loved gardening, recalling her agricultural roots in Athol. Together, Joanne and Norman traveled the world; the family even lived in Holland for a year during Norman’s sabbatical, making their way around Europe. The couple enjoyed wonderful times with a wide circle of colleagues and friends. In later years, Joanne became an accomplished artist, and she continued to uplift those around her. Her greatest joy was the stories of her grandchildren, and she was very involved in their lives.
