

He was born in Boston on January 6, 1927, the son of Abraham and Ida (Epstein) White. He graduated from Boston English High School in 1944 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he attended Radioman school and was assigned as Radioman at General MacArthur headquarters in Tokyo.
In 1951, he graduated from Suffolk University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. In 1952, he successfully completed the entrance exam for the Junior Management Assistant program, designed by the government to attract young college graduates into career service as future executives. After one year of training working for the Northeastern Air Procurement District in Boston, he was assigned to the Watertown Arsenal, where he first served as assistant to the Director of the Supply Division and later as an Organization and Methods Examiner under the Director of the Watertown Arsenal Laboratories.
In 1957, after the death of an uncle, the late Elliot A. Niles, he was presented with the opportunity to assume operations of Niles Systems Co. and Niles State Envelope. He worked long days for four long years to learn the business with no prior experience. In 1960, after the death of the company president, he was asked by two remaining partners of General Envelope Co., Inc. to assume ownership and presidency. Over the years that followed, he grew the company into one of the leading envelope companies in the Boston area. In 1980, he sold the company and semi-retired to enjoy his home on Lake Winnisquam in NH, spending winters in Boynton Beach, FL.
Over the years, he was a vital, committed member of the communities in which he lived. He served as President of the Newton Heart Fund Drive, and Building Committee member at Temple Reyim in Newton as well as President of the their Brotherhood. He served as President of the Angier School PTA and was instrumental in school renovation efforts to meet the needs of a growing student population.
In addition, he was a charter member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, a life member of the Graphic Arts Lodge, B’nai B’rith, and committed supporter of Hebrew Senior Life and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. He was also a member of Temple B’nai Israel in Laconia, NH.
Norman had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid tennis player, loved boating and waterskiing, snowmobiling, woodworking and gardening. He was also an accomplished pool player. Above all, he was a wonderful father and grandfather and a dedicated, loving husband.
Norman is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 40 years, Elizabeth (Betty), son David White and his wife Carole of Pacific Palisades, CA, daughter Ellin Richardson and her husband David of Acton, and daughter Jane Scanlon of Hudson, MA, plus five grandchildren: Matthew White, Samantha Scanlon, Corinne Scanlon, Daniel White and Bethany Tsiaras.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 7th at 1:30pm at Stanetsky Memorial Chapels, 475 Washington Street, Canton. Interment to follow at Sharon Memorial Park. Memorial observance will be held at his late residence Tuesday, following interment.
