Shirley A. (Greenberg) Scott of Dedham, formerly of Peabody and Everett, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, held close by her loving family. She was 91. Beloved wife of the late Basil H. (Sanitsky) Scott. Devoted mother of Karen Dennis and her husband Louis, Lisa Scott and Rick Samuels, Stacey Scott and her husband Scott Kennedy, and David Scott. Loving grandmother of Jake and Liza Dennis, and dear sister of Esta Snider and the late Frances Keller. Survived by her cherished nieces, nephews and treasured cousins.
Born June 29, 1934, in Chelsea, MA, she was the daughter of the late Jennie and Joseph Greenberg. Shirley grew up in Everett alongside her beloved sisters, with summers spent in “the country” forging bonds and memories that would last a lifetime.
She married Basil after meeting on Revere Beach and together they made their home in Peabody, where Shirley was a past president of the local Hadassah chapter and re-entered the workforce after raising their children — making her mark as both an executive assistant and a savvy jewelry saleswoman. Basil predeceased her on January 7, 2006.
Shirley’s joy in baking traditional Jewish holiday treats for her family was matched only by watching her own children carry on the tradition — and the spirit of all that she made with her hands and her heart in the kitchen. There was no recipe she wouldn’t tackle, no meal too complex, and she had remarkable range: from chopped liver to authentic Peking duck. A voracious reader and devoted crossword puzzler, Shirley’s wit and gentle warmth were hallmarks of her caring, nurturing spirit.
Her final years were spent among the incredible caregivers and friends at Hebrew Senior Life in Dedham, where Shirley could always be found soaking up the sun, playing Rummikub or taking part in activities she loved.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 23, at 10 a.m., at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington St., Canton, MA. Private interment following service in Everett. The family will sit Shiva on Monday, 4–8 PM, and Tuesday, 3–8 PM, at the Sharon home of Karen and Louis Dennis.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to Hebrew Senior Life’s “Nursing, Frontline Staff Support Fund” at giving.hebrewseniorlife.org or to a charity of one’s choice.
