Charles E. Delamater, 89, of Canton passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 15, 1928 to the late Robert and Agnes Delamater (Smith). He married Evelyn M. Bower on Sept. 22, 1950, and they were married for 63 years until her death in 2013.
Charles served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army and piloted delivery and observation planes during the Korean War. He loved music and was a gifted singer and longtime member of the Greater Canton Men’s Chorus. He served for many years as a worship leader and choir director for churches in Cleveland, Akron and Canton. Charles was a talented illustrator and cartoonist, had an extensive personal library of books, and was an avid gardener and chess player. He was dedicated to preserving family history, assembling more than 50 photo albums over the years and authoring his personal memoirs, which he hand wrote and illustrated and which totaled more than 900 pages. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In addition to his wife, Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Robert T. Delamater Jr.
Charles is survived by son, David Delamater of Pasadena, Calif.; daughter, Leslie Aitken of Altadena, Calif.; son, Thomas Delamater of McKinney, Tex.; ten grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m on Saturday with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m. at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home in Canton. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.
