

Ida was born on February 3, 1928 in Fayette County, PA to George and Virgie B. (Goodwin) Mates. Married James R. Smith, Sr. on January 8, 1946 in Uniontown, PA. Ida and Jim moved from their home in Connellsville, PA in 1953 to Canton, where they resided until moving to the Bolivar area in 1990. In 2010, due to Ida’s declining health, they moved to Canal Fulton. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #522 and St. John’s United Church of Christ in Strasburg.
Ida was a very strong-willed woman, fighting her health issues for many years. Preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Anna Haney, Clara Smith (Ida’s twin), Leona Sterner; brothers, George Mates, Jr. and Lawren Mates, Sr.; son-in-law, James Roudebush, Sr.; and granddaughter, Michelle Smith. Ida is survived by her husband of nearly 68 years, James Smith, Sr. of Canal Fulton; sister, Flossie Tressler of Fresno, CA; and a brother, Tilman Mates of Akron; son, James (Karin) Smith, Jr. of North Canton; daughters, Carol (David) Holl of North Canton, and Nancy Roudebush of Bolivar. grandchildren, Dana Nichols, Daniel Mossor, James (Kristy) Roudebush, Jr., Stacy Smith, Dr. Douglas Holl, and Randy (Lisa) Sisler; and fifteen great-grand children.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00am in the Karlo-Libby Funeral Home. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Friends may call Tuesday from 3:00-6:00pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or Mercy Medical Center Hospice, 7568 Whipple Ave NW, North Canton, OH 44720. Ida is now with our God and his angels. We will miss her and her loving ways.
