Alma Glee Attaway was born on August 9, 1921 at Mt. Pleasant, Texas to Harvey and Annie Attaway. She attended schools in the area and graduated from Union Hill High School in 1939. Shortly after graduation, she moved to the Dallas area to work at a hosiery mill where she met Ike Burk. On September 24, 1942, they were married. Several years later Alma attended beautician school and followed this profession for 25 plus years. In the late 1970’s some friends told them about a house next door to them in Canton that was for sale for $5,000. Ike and Alma bought that little “dream” house and officially moved to Canton in 1980. They loved living in Canton. They were 2 of the 29 people who established Lakeside Baptist Church --- a church they loved and attended until their health failed. They bought a travel trailer and each month went traveling with the Good Sam Club. When Ike’s health failed and he could no longer drive, they purchased a cab-over camper which Alma drove so they could continue camping with their friends. Alma cared for her ailing husband in their home until Christmas Day 2005 when he suddenly passed away. Their love for each other was equal to that of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. She loved Mike as though he were her own son, and the 4 grandchildren, the 12 great grandchildren and the 6 great-great grandchildren that are a part of his legacy. After Ike passed away, she continued attending church, was involved in Stars (senior group at Lakeside) attended graduations, weddings and events of family members. She also helped deliver Meals on Wheels each week. About 4-1/2 years ago she fell at her home and broke her hip. After that time, she could no longer live alone and spent her days in nursing homes. We cannot say enough good things about the staff at Heritage Manor and more recently Canton Oaks for the wonderful care she received. We, her family, are rejoicing that she is first with her Lord Jesus and second with the love of life, Ike Burk.
Alma leaves behind her sister Dorothy McFall of Mabank; many nieces and nephews; her stepson Mike and his wife Joyce; grandchildren Todd Burk (Kimberly), Roger Burk (Michelle), Matt Burk (Jessica), Angela Hann (Brian); 12 great grandchildren and 6 great, great grandchildren.
Arrangements under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton, TX.
