

Services for E.W. Johnson, Jr., 97, of Canton will be held 2pm Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton with Pastor Jonathan Smith and Jerry Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Cool Springs Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson passed away March 7, 2026 in Grand Saline. He was born January 13, 1929 in Quitman to Ervin Wesley Johnson and Eva Lee Davenport Johnson.
E.W. was born in 1929, the year of the Great Stock Market Crash of The Great Depression. He was raised in Canton. At the age of 17 to 19 years old, he played guitar in the "Cowboy Weaver's Band." His stage name was "Johnny."
E.W.'s dad taught him to drive 18 wheeler trucks and he would help his dad driving gas trucks for G.W. Oil Co. in Canton. In 1949 he was hit by a car crossing the road in Dallas. He spent 17 months in a full-leg cast. E.W. met Bertha Wages during that time. He married Bertha on April 6, 1951, with his cast on.
E.W. worked in the sheet metal and air conditioner business in the Dallas area most of his life. He also drove a dump truck and hauled rock and sand in the Van Zandt County area.
E.W. enjoyed playing baseball, a left handed pitcher, on the church baseball team. You could always find him fishing or hunting every chance he got. E.W. loved playing guitar. He taught his grandson, Jeremy, to play the guitar. He played in church and led Praise and Worship service most of his life. E.W. was a member of Grace Family Church. He was known for his kind soul to others.
Mr. Johnson is preceded in death by his son, David Michael Johnson; his mom, Evelyn Thornsberry, and his dad, Ervin Wesley Johnson.
E.W. is survived by his wife of almost 75 years, Bertha Pearl Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Birenbaum; son, Jerry Johnson; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
