Mrs. Burns passed away February 20, 2025 in Tyler. She was born September 20, 1935 in Dallas to Johnie A. and Nettie Mae Swinney Sanders.
Sue married the love of her life, Jerry Burns in August of 1953 when she was 17 years old. They shared 71 wonderful years together. After moving to Dallas for Jerry’s work, she completed her high school education. Eventually moving back to Canton and having their 3 children. Sue began her college education at Henderson County Junior College and East Texas State University. She completed her bachelors and master’s degree to become a teacher. She spent 20 years in the field of education, not just teaching but also mentoring her students as she cared deeply for each of them. It was not uncommon for her to stay after school to tutor and support students in need.
In 1972 Jerry and Sue along with others, co-founded Trinity Church in Canton, now known as Victory Church. She was known for her spirit and gift of hospitality. It was not unusual for them to offer for family and friends to reside with them in their home over the years. She also taught others how to host in their own homes. Her love for God was evident in everything she did. She was a devoted student of the Word, studying diligently and teaching regularly at church. Even after retirement, Sue remained active, working with Jerry on occasion in the hardware business, volunteering at Manna, and volunteering at the church. For many years she took the lead of the Coats for Kids ministry at Victory Church, which gave away thousands of winter coats to children in need in Van Zandt County. She took care of aging parents and in laws and enjoyed her time with her grandkids.
Sue will be remembered most as being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and caretaker. And for her deep relationship with God, shown through her love, generosity and kindness. She aged with grace, always speaking wisdom and love, as a reflection of her deep walk with God. Her legacy of care, hospitality and faith will live on in our family and the lives of others, inspiring us all to show the same love a devotion to our families and friends.
