Born on July 17, 1947 in Austin, Texas, David was the son of Gene and Leora (Nix) McNeil — and a true Austinite through and through, born and raised in the city he called home for most of his life. He built his life through hard work, loyalty, a good sense of humor, and family.
David proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. His service reflected a deep sense of duty, courage, and commitment, values that remained central to who he was throughout his life.
He was a man who took quiet pleasure in a neatly kept yard and a cool pool on a hot Texas afternoon, often escaping to the coast to fish or simply read the newspaper by the water. He had a calm, steady presence that made the people around him feel safe — the sort of quiet strength you don’t always notice until you need it most, and then you realize it was there all along.
Above all else, David was a devoted family man who lit up around his three granddaughters. He is survived by his partner, Terri Gavin; his daughter, Abby (McNeil) Woods, and son-in-law, Jamie Woods; and beloved granddaughters, Emerson, Logan, and Blake Woods. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Jeanne (Sellner) McNeil; their son, Sean McNeil; and his parents, Gene and Leora McNeil.
David will be dearly missed and forever remembered by the family he devoted himself to, his friends, and by anyone lucky enough to know him.
