

Eugenia Sicam Holanday, a retired registered nurse, passed away peacefully at her home in Cape Coral, Florida on the morning of January 29th, 2022 at the age of 96. Known as Eugene or Gene to those who knew her, she was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and her husband, Vicente Holanday of 56 years. She is survived by her daughter Charito (Alex), her grandson Ryan (Jessica), and her granddaughter, Jillian (Ryan).
Gene was born in the city of San Manuel, Pangasinan, Philippines on Christmas Day in 1925. She attended the University of Santo Tomas and graduated as a registered nurse. She was recruited by Cook County Community Hospital and immigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1968. She worked by herself in Chicago, living in a dormitory for a year, before sending for her husband and daughter to join her in Chicago from the Philippines. In 1971, she settled with her family in Broadview, Illinois working at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital as a spinal cord injury nurse until her retirement in 1990. In 1991, Gene and her husband retired to Cape Coral, Florida. Together, with their love of gardening, they planted various exotic fruits and vegetables native to the Philippines that are still harvested to this day in their backyard. In addition to her love of gardening, Gene was an avid Chicago sports fan, especially for her Chicago Cubs who she witnessed finally winning the World Series in 2016. She was also an ardent dog lover, enjoyed watching professional wrestling, playing card games, and was a member of the Engelbert Humperdinck fan club.
A visitation for Eugenia will be held Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Coral Ridge Funeral Home & Cemetery, 950 Chiquita Blvd. S, Cape Coral, FL 33991. A funeral service will occur Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM, 950 Chiquita Blvd. S, Cape Coral, FL 33991. A committal service will occur Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 11:15 AM, 950 Chiquita Blvd. S, Cape Coral, FL 33991.
