Helen I. (Jean) Shields of Cape Coral, FL passed away July 24, 2021. Jean is survived by her son Art Shields, daughter Linda (Lin) Behr, grandson Michael Behr, and her sister Virginia (Ginger) Harris. She is preceded in death by her husband Arthur C. Shields, daughter Jacqueline (Jaci) Weis, and grandson Jeffrey Behr. Jean was born in Coldwater, MI, the daughter of Alice and Lester Balch of Battle Creek, MI. After graduation from High School, Jean joined the US Air Force and was stationed at Eglin AFB during the Korean War. She was honorably discharged in 1954 and returned to Carney’s Point, NJ with her Husband and first child. Jean and her growing family moved to Pennsville, NJ, where she enjoyed working for the Pennsville Sunbeam and Century 21 Reality. Jean attended Gloucester Community College and earned a 2-year certificate in Inhalation Therapy, and worked part time at Gloucester Hospital. Jean and Art retired in 1994, and relocated to Cape Coral, FL, where they joined the New Residents Club, the Navigator Boat Club, and the City Canal Watch Program. Jean also worked part time at both Cape Coral and Health Park Hospitals. Jean wrote articles for the Cape Coral Breeze for many years, and was a long time, honorary life time member, of the Cape Coral Garden Club. Jean enjoyed volunteering at the Edison Home and loved digging around helping things grow and bloom. Jean was very active with garden club events and conferences, and enjoyed creating flower arrangements and designs for the various flower shows in and around Lee County. After her husband Art passed in 2010, Jean’s focus was her family and her large circle of friends. The Grannies Club brought great joy to her life, as did her children and grandchildren. A bright star has left this earth.

Jean was a long-time member of the Friends of the Cape Coral Library. She was a regular at our meetings and events over the last 18 years and loved volunteering at our book sales. I, as well as our other members, will miss her greatly.

Jean has been a most beloved member and honorary member of the Garden Club of Cape Coral since its founding in 1997. She was President of the Club from in 2003-2004 and has served on the Board in a variety of different roles. She was always the first to say 'yes', I'll do that! She could always be relied on to go the extra mile to make something happen. She was one of the first recipients of the Club's prestigious Service award. She was also a stalwart supporter of the Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council and her many friends there will miss her sadly also. I am proud to have called Jean my friend and I will always love and respect her memory. She will be sadly missed by so many whose lives she touched with her gentle humor and friendly support.
