March 29, 1945 – January 27, 2025
Franklin “Richard” McBroom, 79, left us peacefully on Monday, January 27, 2025, after a long and happy life.
Richard (fondly known to many as “Mop”) was born on March 29, 1945 in Indianapolis, IN to his loving parents Frederick and Katherine McBroom. He was a devoted husband to his wife EJ for 45 wonderful years, a caring father to his sons Rob and Matt (Lucia) and a proud Grandfather to Inara (16), Mason (14), James (4) and Margaret (2). Richard was also a loving Uncle to Lori Cowin (Joe) and Fred McBroom (Carin) and is also survived by many other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his father Fred (Tina), mother Kay and brother Fred (Jackie).
Richard graduated from North Central High School where he made some of his best and life-long friends in the world. He later attended Ball State University; however, his true love was always for the Indiana Hoosiers. He was a proud supporter of IU for over 40 years and a member of the Varsity Club. He enjoyed attending basketball and football games, hosting memorable tailgates for friends and family over the years.
Showing an entrepreneurial spirit early on, Richard began sweeping floors at the age of 12 for the family business, McBroom Electric Company. He took a short detour to pursue his passion and love for music (he was a big fan of The Eagles and The Beatles) to manage the band “The Boys Next Door” who were opening for The Beach Boys at the time (also one of his favorite bands). He later returned to the family business where he worked his way up to President and became owner of the company at the age of 39. Richard was also a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), serving a term as Chapter Chair of YPO Gold, and then a member of World Presidents’ Organization (WPO).
Golf was a true passion for Richard. He was an avid golfer throughout his life and an active member of Meridian Hills early on, eventually becoming a member of Crooked Stick Golf Club where he served as Club President from 2000 to 2003. While he enjoyed 48 years playing Crooked Stick, Richard was proud to have played many notable courses including Cypress Point, Pine Valley and Augusta National where he played his last round of golf with his son Matt. Richard also loved lake life. Some of his fondest memories were from his time spent at Lake Wawasee, where he would enjoy each summer with his family and close friends.
To honor Richard’s memory, a celebration of life will be held at Crooked Stick Golf Club on Sunday, February 2 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Brief remarks and memories will be shared at 4:30 PM to celebrate the incredible life he lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please donate to The First Tee of Indiana, Evans Scholars Foundation, or Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana.
