Obituary of John W. Campbell
John W. Campbell, 81, of Plainfield, Indiana departed this life on Monday, April 8, 2024 in Indianapolis. John was born September 28, 1942 in Ohio to the late Robert James & Ella (Jordan) Campbell, Sr. He grew up and attended schools on the north side of Indianapolis and was a graduate of North Central High School. He attended Purdue University prior to returning home to help his family after his father’s sudden death in 1962. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1963 until his Honorable Discharge in 1969. John earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in 1968. He worked as a Certified Public Accountant then earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University School of Law in 1981. John built a successful law practice in Indianapolis as a tax attorney and criminal defense attorney for more than 40 years. He had an unparalleled respect and appreciation for the practice of law which defined him both personally and professionally. John was a dedicated counselor to his clients and often went above and beyond to ensure optimal outcomes and fair access to the court systems. He committed his life to the practice of law and heightening standards in the legal profession which, in turn, made lasting impacts throughout the Indianapolis legal community. In addition to his law practice, John enjoyed several appointments over the years as a Judge Pro Tem in Marion County, Indiana. John’s contributions to the legal profession extended beyond his practice. As a member of esteemed associations such as the Indianapolis Bar Association, Indiana State Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, American Bar Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, he made lasting impacts on the legal community. John also spent several years volunteering his time to ensure the success of The Honorable Robert H. Staton Moot Court Competition at IU McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. This brought him great joy as he was committed to giving back to the legal community and helping new lawyers succeed in the practice of law. Beyond the courtroom, John loved to read and continued to study the law following his retirement in 2019. He also loved Corvettes and making memories with his family.
