Amechi Augustine Amanugi was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 12, 1963. He moved to Teaneck, New Jersey, with his family in 1971. He graduated from St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1981. After graduation, Amechi entered the Navy, but a severe injury during basic training ended his Navy hopes. He then went on to attend DeVry Institute of Technology to study and further his interest in computer technology.
Amechi life was filled with wonder about technology and its offshoots. He was an avid gamer. He looked forward to attending Quakecon every year in Dallas, Texas. He also spent time with his friends playing Dungeons and Dragons yearly.
He loved science fiction. Star Trek, Star Wars, and 2001: A Space Odyssey were some of his most loved interests. He attended Star Trek conventions and counted many fellow Trekers as good friends. He was also interested in space exploration. He studied NASA and the many space projections the agency produced. He was always excited to see a successful rocket launch. He dedicated many hours to completing models of both actual and fictional spacecraft. They were some of his most prized possessions.
Though Amechi enjoyed extraterrestrial interests, he also enjoyed regular down-to-earth activities. He loved NASCAR. He owned an official NASCAR jacket, which he wore with pride. He was also a New York Giants fan. He would gather with other fans at Buffalo Joe’s in Dallas every game day to support the team.
Amechi was a lifelong Catholic, which he showed through his kind and generous spirit. He had a genuine love for everyone he encountered. He enjoyed being with people and was always ready to accept an invitation. He provided his love and support to anyone who needed it. He gave unselfishly. His enthusiasm for the simplest things this life offered was infectious and one of his greatest gifts.
Amechi passed away on April 30, 2024. He was preceded in death by his mother, Henrietta Ngozi Amanugi. He is survived by his father, Mozie Michael Amanugi, his sister, Obi Amanugi, and his brothers, Ifeanyichuku Amanugi and Akaluzia Aaron Amanugi. He also leaves behind numerous cousins and his extended family of wonderful, loving friends.
Funeral Mass will be held on 11 am, June 28th, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1705 E. Peters Colony Road, Carrollton, Texas 75007. Private interment of ashes will be held at a later date.
