Barbara was born in Inglewood, CA to Harry and Thelma Koons. She was the youngest of two children and grew up traveling the world through her father’s work alongside her beloved brother Bill. She fondly recalled family stints in Orange County, Alberta, Canada, The Hague, The Netherlands, and Paris, France. The family eventually settled in Greenbrae, CA and Barbara graduated from Redwood High School in Larkspur, CA. She subsequently attended the University of California at Berkeley where she majored in Political Science and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and the Phi Beta Kappa society.
Barbara met her husband Dale in Honolulu and they married in Melvindale, MI in 1970. They relocated to Novato, CA, where they raised their two sons. Barbara volunteered in the community as a scout and sports mom, field trip chaperone, in-class art docent, and scholarship coordinator.
Barbara had a long and impactful career as a business systems analyst and document control specialist in the enterprise software, utility regulation, and national security industries.
Barbara and Dale enjoyed traveling off the beaten track and shared international adventures in Europe, Jamaica, and Central America. Following Dale’s sudden passing in 1997 she continued to travel with her sons, alone, or with friends to Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Surviving aggressive breast cancer inspired her to philanthropy: funding peace-themed art installations in conflict zones around the world; job training centers in Los Angeles; and animal rescue charities in northern Nevada.
Barbara was known for her style, intellect, and generosity. She will be remembered by friends and family as a wonderful woman with a heart of gold.
Barbara is survived by her son, Dale, (Sarah) and their son Harold of Novato, CA; and son William of Red Rock, NV.
A celebration of life will be held in Summer of 2026.
