He grew up on fishing and skiing, his two greatest passions. He also loved to golf, excelled in high school track and field, ice hockey, and possessed a great love for music, knowing the words to hundreds of songs and was always whistling a tune. He played the sax and accordion and adored reading. History fascinated him, and along with the joy he derived from building and fixing things, he loved gardening and was always so proud of his vegetable garden. In the years 1953 and ’54 he proudly served in the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division in Austria where he taught mountain climbing and survival. He taught skiing at Mont Tremblant, Quebec where he met and fell in love with one of his students… Dolores Slivka. They married that year on December 10, 1955 in New York City. It would be a marriage to last nearly 65 years. They decided to raise their soon-to-be family in California where in Los Angeles she gave birth to their daughter Laurie, followed by son Jeff. They moved to the suburbs of Anaheim, next to Disneyland, in 1957. There, she gave birth to their third son, David. In the late ‘70’s they moved to Anaheim Hills, then to South Lake Tahoe in 1986, and finally to their final home in Indian Hills (Carson City) in 2002.
After retiring as a lithographer for the Los Angeles Times Mirror Press, they traveled the world extensively visiting six of the seven continents, sailing on 28 cruises, and they adored RV camping all over this country as well as Canada with their children, grandchildren, and cats. Everyone who met him saw how he loved to laugh and always wanted to make others laugh. Following the passing of Dolores in October 2020, he is now once again reunited with the love of his life for over 65 years, into the grace and happiness of God’s Heavenly Kingdom.
Among his survivors are his daughter, Laurie Swanson and husband Keith of Genoa; son, David of Indian Hills; three grandchildren, Jason Scott, Randy Scott, Jennifer Meyer, her husband Rich; and two great-grandchildren, Rayland and Jack.
