Back in the day (1991-92), Tom and his wife Billie used to have me over for supper quite often.  I was a young man then going through young man growing pains and they were always there to lend an ear.  Tom was one of the funniest guys I ever met.  He was a mentor of mine in the USGS when I was an intern and then later as a new hire.  I left the USGS many years ago but have never forgot Tom & Billie and how they helped one young man grow up.  If Tom were to read this he'd probably give me the finger, chuckle and wink.  He was just that kind of guy.  A great guy.  Billie if you read this, always know that you are remembered with great affection.
