Born on October 29, 1940 in Cartersville, GA, she was the daughter of the late Charlotte Adele (Mama Dell) Howell and the late Samuel Monroe Howell, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents and eldest daughter, Charlotte Dianne Sullins Ross.
Charlotte spent all of her life in Cartersville GA, attending the city schools and graduating from Cartersville High School in 1958. She has been a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cartersville GA.
She married James William Sullins and had three Children, Charlotte Dianne Sullins, William Wesley Sullins, and Dixie Ann Sullins. After being divorced, Charlotte became devoted to raising and providing for her three children. She poured everything she had into her responsibilities as a parent, and you never saw her really doing things for herself, only for others.
She worked numerous jobs and struggled through some hard times but always found a way to get by. At times, she even held multiple jobs simultaneously. She worked at Lockheed in Marietta for a good while until the end of the C-141 and C-5A programs, and at Simmons Engineering, Kroger, Murata Manufacturing, delivered newspapers, worked at the family business Enterprise Oil Company and her final job was at Shaw Industries.
Charlotte was also dedicated to her mother throughout her life and was especially devoted to her in the final chapters of Mama Dell’s life. Charlotte took her to the First Presbyterian church each Sunday in the final years as long as Mama Dell was able. After that, Charlotte was with her mother most days helping take care of her until her death in 2017.
Throughout her life, Charlotte also loved raising Great Danes and had several litters of puppies as well. Some of the more memorable dogs were named Midnight, Bobby, Liberty, Max, and Dane. For decades Charlotte was known by neighbors all around her subdivision as the lady that they always saw out walking her massive Great Dane. Whenever she met anyone, she would always brag about her current Great Dane and proudly tell them how much it weighed. Multigenerational family beach vacations brought much joy to Charlotte, too. She loved long walks finding shells and watching her grandchildren play in the surf.
Charlotte loved to spend time at Clear Lake, which was formed decades ago in North Bartow County on Clear Creek by her father and grandfather Sam Howell Senior. Charlotte and her children would spend a lot of their summers staying at the lake house and trying to deal with the chiggers, ticks, snakes, leeches and other pleasantries associated with life up there. In her final years, Charlotte always reflected on the wonderful times she had at Clear Lake and daily would discuss it and say she wanted someone to find her bathing suit and take her swimming up there. She was able to visit and get in the lake this summer in the months leading up to her passing.
She also developed a fondness for going to yard sales and meeting new people and bringing home all kinds of trinkets and antiques. Charlotte was a giving person as well and always tried to find ways to help her friends and neighbors. As a part of her yard sale hobby, she acquired a lot of health care equipment and was able to give or loan much of it to those in need around her. She also gave a lot to numerous charities; she got so well known for that tendency that her mailbox was full of requests that she had a hard time saying no to them.
Charlotte has suffered from Alzheimer’s/early onset dementia which slowly progressed over the last decade of her life and finally made her unable to fully care for herself over the last 3 years. With the help of her children, she was able to remain in her home which she has owned since it was built in 1965. That house holds so many precious memories for her family.
Charlotte was known by her friends and family as being one of the most loving, forgiving, and hard working people ever. She was known by her grandchildren as “Nana”. She was respected and loved by all that knew her!
Although she was not a truly active church member at the time of her passing, she is a Christian, and in her final years did confess her human sinful nature, openly accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, as she knew that her sins were paid in full on the cross and the family takes comfort in knowing she is spending eternity in the presence of Jesus along with family members who preceded her in death.
Charlotte is survived by her children, William Wesley Sullins (Sharon), Dixie Ann Mullinax (Ed), Jeffery Ross, three sisters: Dot Howell Dunaway (Bill), Linda Howell Hall, and Nan Howell Collier (Dennis); her grandchildren: Sam Sullins, Jake Sullins, Reid Selton (Christiana) and great grandchild Brooks Selton. There are also numerous surviving nieces, a nephew and their offspring; all of which meant a great deal to Charlotte.
The family would like to express a very sincere and special thank you to our extended family member Dot Beavers Dodd without whom it would not have been possible to give Charlotte the joy of spending the final part of her life in her house of 60 years. The family would also like to express appreciation and gratitude to the physicians of the Harbin Clinic in Rome and Cartersville for all the health care provided over the years. One can only imagine how many times some of them got to hear all about Charlotte’s Great Danes and how proud she was to have come from a family of doctors whom she would name for them at every visit. Also, the family is very thankful for the Atrium Hospice and Healthcare group, that provided amazing compassionate care and services at all times.
