

Dorman was born in Hamilton Co., TN, on September 16, 1933, the son of the late Joseph Alfred Shropshire, Jr. and Lennie Bettis Shropshire. Dorman was a graduate of Cartersville High School and served two years in the U. S. Army. He returned in 1956 to the family dairy farm to begin a successful career as a dairy farmer and married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne Elizabeth McRae.
Dorman received several awards during his 40 year farming career including Bartow Co. Farm Family of the Year, Agri-Leader of the Year for the Atlanta area, and several Milk Production and Quality Awards. He also received a Young Entrepreneur Award from Georgia Tech for the development of a method for rapidly cooling milk. He served on the Board of Directors for Georgia Milk Producers for many years. Having been a 4-H member as a youth, Dorman also served many years as a Bartow Co. Adult Volunteer
4-H Leader. He was a former member of the Cartersville Rotary Club and the Bartow Co.-Cartersville Chamber of Commerce and instrumental in hiring their first Executive Director, fundraising for the first Chamber building at Dixie Ave. and East Main Sr. , and bringing the first specialist physician to the former Sam Howell Hospital. Dorman was also a member of the Hospital Board of Directors and very active member of the Bartow Co. Sheriff’s Department Rescue Unit, plus serving many hours as a volunteer Deputy .
Dorman was a member of Cartersville First Baptist Church for many years and served as an RA Leader. He was a charter member of Heritage Baptist Church serving as a Trustee for 19 years, Property Chairperson, and Deacon. After moving to Statesboro four years ago, he joined the Brooklet United Methodist Church, Brooklet, GA He was a very kind, generous, humble, and loving servant of God, family member, and friend to many.
Dorman was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Alton Shropshire; and brother,
Forrest J. Shropshire.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Suzanne M. Shropshire; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah (Debo) S. and David P. Boddiford; two grandsons, Andrew and Eric Boddiford, all of Sylvania, GA; sister and husband, Doris and Ken Thornton., Knoxville, TN; and nephews, Chuck and Landy Shropshire, and Kelly Thornton; and nieces, Amy and Beth Thornton.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Heritage Baptist Church, Cartersville, GA, with Dr. Bob Balance officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Boddiford, Eric Boddiford, Chuck Shropshire, Landy Shropshire, Kelly Thornton, Richard McRae, Kirby McRae, and Danny Mohundro.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Heritage Baptist Church Disciples Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home on Friday, August 27, 2010, from 6 – 8 p.m.
