Evelyn Chastain Dabbs, age 94, died on May 20, 2016, at Maple Ridge Health Care Center in Cartersville, Georgia. A Cartersville native, she was born on April 14, 1922, the first of seven children of Homer L. and Lula P. Bell Chastain.
In 1940 Evelyn married Stanley E. Dabbs. They raised two daughters and made a happy home in their hometown until his death in 1989 shortly before their 50th anniversary. Evelyn and Stanley were loyal active members of Pine Grove Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.
Evelyn worked at E-Z Mills for many years, and later enjoyed working for Munn’s until she retired to care for her mother in her final years. Family was Evelyn’s primary focus. She liked nothing more than planning a party, and was known for her extraordinary hospitality and good taste. A woman of many talents, she was an exceptional cook and an accomplished seamstress. After retirement, she took an art course and painted lovely landscapes in oils. She had a gift for creativity, fashioning beautiful custom window treatments for her own home and the homes of close family members. She prepared outstanding main dishes and desserts for family gatherings and to cheer friends, and catered weddings and other events for those she loved. Evelyn was an avid reader. She loved animals and the beauty of nature, and enjoyed watching programs about wildlife. She never lost her excitement for the prospect of her next trip.
In addition to her beloved husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Mamie Mitchell, brothers J. W. and Thomas Chastain, nephews Kenneth Brown, Tim, Ted, and Paul Chastain, and brothers-in-law H. D. “Dee” Brown, and Johnny Mitchell.
