After growing up in western North Carolina and east Tennessee she left as a young adult and moved to Cartersville in 1948 to work for Good Year Mills. There she met her future husband, Fred Jarrett. They married in 1949, had 2 sons. She continued to work first at EZ Mills and then Cartersville Undergarment where she worked for almost 30 years. She and Fred arranged their work schedules around care for their sons and time to work in their church, first at Oak Grove Baptist and later at Young Street and finally at Friendship Baptist.
Evelyn was always ready to help a neighbor or church member in need. She was a wonderful cook and freely shared her talent. She was a dedicated church member wherever they belonged. When she saw things that needed to be done, she took action and if she did not have the skills needed to take on the challenge she developed them. Things like learning to play the piano at age 41 so that they would always have a pianist at church and when she and Fred sang at funerals.
Her work and leadership extended outside of her local church. She was the associational director of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) for what is now the Bartow Baptist association for more almost two decades. She developed many skills in this roIe and taught and inspired many young women who were trying to help their churches start WMU programs.
