The family moved to Cartersville when Marvin was a young age to establish the H&M Meat Market family business. He later graduated from Cartersville High School in 1956, where he was a member of the CHS marching and Windjammers Bands.
After working 34 years in leadership at Union Carbide/First Brands, he accepted an early retirement package allowing him to pursue a long felt passion of serving the public as a Bartow County Deputy Sheriff. His second career lasted another 20 years. Over the course of his working life, Marvin worked part-time for Owen Funeral home, and volunteered his time to the Bartow County Sheriff’s department. He also assisted in the creation of the first Bartow Public Safety & Rescue Unit. Marvin’s desire to further serve the Cartersville community was evidenced by his 12 years serving as Councilman for Ward 2.
Marvin was not all about work. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, family, and friends. Although he didn't venture out far from the hunting camp, later in life, he was known to stay behind to be sure good food was ready for all of those around. Watching NASCAR and rooting for #24, Jeff Gordon was another passion, along with cheering for his Altanta Braves whether they were winning or losing. His childhood was filled with watching western movies, and so was his latter years. Nothing was more special than the time he spent with his family and friends at Christmas and Sunday dinners. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge #63, and a member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple.
In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his siblings Opal Hartsfield, Betty Carlisle Cobb, Nancy Whitley, and Adrain and Max Mitchell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Peggy Bramlett Mitchell, daughter Pamela Fowler (Ronnie), and sons Jimmy (Julie), Robert, and Billy (Lori); grandchildren Ashley and Allie Fowler, Haley Larson (Ed), Jeremiah, Molly, Holly, Sophia, and Myles Mitchell, and great-grandchild Melody Larson; brother-in-law James Whitley, sister-in-law Mary Anna Mitchell, numerous nieces and nephews, and a brother of the heart, "Uncle" Henry Lee Smith.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at eleven o'clock Wednesday morning, the 3rd of August at Tabernacle Baptist Church with Dr. Don Hattaway and Rev. Richard Poe officiating. Internment will immediately follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
