Alvin was born in Carrboro, lived most of his life in Durham. He served in the Army during the Korean War with the 66th Engineer TOPO Division. He also served as Commander of the American Legion Post #6 in Chapel Hill for 15 years. He retired from Municipal Forms as a Master Printer. Al’s life was about serving the Lord and serving others. He was a Deacon, trustee, and chair of personnel committee at Farrington Road Baptist Church. He was involved in the feasibility, property search, building design, and construction process of the new church building.
Al spent many years doing mission work in the British West Indies. He found great joy in selfless service to others. Above all his desire is that God be glorified in all things. Even through his most recent sickness, doing things for others in need, to the glory of God, remained his priority and he took every opportunity to share his love for Christ and his fellow man.
Al was the lead singer of the Fellowship Singers for many years, with a great love for southern gospel music. Later in life he discovered the joy of playing golf where he spent memorable times of fellowship with friends and family on the golf course. He loved fishing with his son and friends. Close ties with family and friends were important to him. His roll as grandfather left lasting impressions on his grandchildren impacting their lives in powerful ways.
