Amelia (Amy) Deutsch Pobiner, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and a remarkable woman, passed away at the age of 94 on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, after living a life filled with love and accomplishments.
Amy was born on March 15, 1931, in the Bronx, New York, to the late Helen and Morris Deutsch. She was the younger sister of Ira Deutsch (deceased). Growing up as one of the Silent Generation during the Great Depression and World War II, Amy experienced a world marked by challenges and uncertainty, yet her childhood was characterized by laughter, resilience, and adventures. Summers spent at her family’s lake house on Lake Hiawatha in northern New Jersey were filled with joy, and her spirited, independent nature shone through from a young age. At just five years old, she defended her brother from bullies, chasing them off with rocks, and as a teenager was ratted out for cigarette smoking by a neighbor who spotted smoke being blown out the bathroom window.
Amy excelled academically, graduating from The City College of New York with her BA in three years at the age of 20, a remarkable achievement. To celebrate that milestone, she embarked on a life-changing six-week solo journey through Europe with a tour group, an adventure that expanded her horizons and ignited a lifelong passion for travel.
Professionally, Amy began her career as an elementary school teacher in the New York City public schools during the early 1950s. After raising her children, she applied her administrative and accounting skills to support several small businesses. Her creativity was evident in the beautiful oil paintings, knitted sweaters, embroidered tapestries, and needlepoint pillows she left behind as cherished keepsakes for loved ones.
Amy met the love of her life, Harvey, on a blind date set by her father and his uncle who taught school together. Ever the independent spirit, Amy initially said no, but fate had other plans. She changed her mind, and thank goodness she did, because that blind date led to their marriage less than a year later in 1954, and the 65+ year love story was still ongoing at the time of Harvey’s 2020 passing. Now it is eternal.
Amy took great pride in the family she and Harvey built together. She was a devoted mother to their son and daughter, celebrating their academic, professional, and personal achievements. Amy was actively involved in their lives, serving as a PTA mom, Classroom mom, Cub Scout den mother, and substitute teacher.
Amy and Harvey spent the first 40 years of marriage living in New Jersey. They moved to Cary, NC in 1994 and enjoyed a rich retirement with many newfound friendships. Together, they enjoyed countless travels across Europe and beyond, sharing unforgettable experiences that enriched their lives.
Amy is survived by son Joe Pobiner and wife Johnnie Stark, Grapevine, TX; daughter Bonnie Pobiner and husband Patrick Graham, Raleigh, NC; cherished granddaughter Ana Pobiner, Raleigh, NC; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service to honor Amy’s life is being planned at Wake Memorial Park in Cary, NC.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Amy’s memory to your favorite charity.
