

Audrey was a devoted mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend to many. She spent her career teaching students with physical and mental disabilities, primarily in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her kindness and caring spirit touched countless lives and will be deeply missed.
Faith and service were central to Audrey’s life. She was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, First United Methodist Church in Asheboro, and Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Raleigh. She also gave generously of her time as a volunteer with many organizations, including the North Carolina Zoo and Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
Born in Wright, Louisiana, Audrey graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University and a Master of Arts degree from Appalachian State University. She worked in the public school system for many years and led the Special Education efforts of the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County School System prior to her retirement.
Audrey is survived by her children: Bud Whitmeyer and partner Tammy Goodman of Asheville; Nancy Whitmeyer-Weathers and husband Sam Whitmeyer-Weathers of Cary; and Randy Whitmeyer and wife Susan Whitmeyer of Raleigh, and by her stepchildren: Scott Harriman and wife Janis Harriman of Powell, TN; Todd Harriman and wife Vonda Harriman of Lexington, NC; and Melanie Bounds and husband James Bounds of Bristow, VA.
She was a loving grandmother to Maggie LaPlante, Sarah Whitmeyer Letke, Natalie Whitlock, Audrey Whitmeyer-Weathers, Thomas Whitmeyer-Weathers, Rachel Whitmeyer, Michael Whitmeyer, Dillon Rust, Emily Harriman, Andrea Harriman, and Brantley Harriman, and a proud great-grandmother to Wesley LaPlante, Marshall LaPlante, and Anne Kathryn Letke. Audrey is also remembered fondly by numerous nieces and nephews.
Audrey was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life James Harriman.
A celebration of Audrey’s life will be held 2:00 p.m., October 18, 2025, at a private venue, please inquire with the family for directions. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a charity that is meaningful to you.
