

On November 23, 2012, we encircled him with love as he went to be with our Father in Heaven.
Bob was the youngest child to Julia Glance and James Carl Surratt. He attended city schools in Salisbury, NC. He graduated from Boyden High School in 1945, and then went on to join the US Navy. There he served two years at Bainbridge Naval Station in which he played trumpet in the Navy band. Later, he supervised the ship’s service stove at a Navy Receiving Station in Newport News, VA.
After his service in the Navy, he attended Catawba College in Salisbury.
Bob married the love of his life and best friend, Mary Catherine Drum . The beautiful romance was unwavering from the moment they met. They held hands 62 years into their marriage.
After marrying Mary Catherine, Bob was employed by Esso Standard Oil Company in Salisbury, Drum Funeral Home, Mary’s family’s business, and in 1962 became a State ABC Officer working out of Winston Salem NC. Two years later, Bob was promoted to Assistant Director-Hearing Officer and he and his family moved to Raleigh. In 1966, he became Supervisor in the Enforcement Division in the Raleigh District, and in 1980 was promoted to Deputy Director of Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) until his retirement in 1983. At his retirement, he was presented with “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine” award.
After retiring in 1983, Bob took over management of Drum Funeral Home in Conover, NC, until 1986 and returned to Raleigh at that time. He served on the Board of Directors at Raleigh Golf Association for ten years.
Bob dearly loved his family, church, neighbors, his golfing buddies, his vegetable garden, singing in Macedonia Methodist’s choir, playing trumpet in the Macedonia Brass Quartet and NCSU athletic programs.
He is survived by his wife Mary, son, Steve Surratt and wife Cynthia of Goldsboro; daughter, Julie Cable and husband Carlton of Apex, daughter, Jeanne Garrity and husband Tom of Apex and daughter Laura Cox and husband Don of Raleigh. His surving sibling is Josephine Carpenter of Salisbury. He has 8 grandchildren; Stacy Surratt, Jeff Cable and wife Michele, Joey Surratt and wife Karen, Matt Cable and wife Michelle, Katie Pollard and husband Mitch, Josh Cox, Maggie Garrity, and Kaitlyn Cox; 9 great-grandchildren, London Belvin Surratt, Malachi Belvin Surratt, Kendall Surratt, Tanner Cable, Gray Cable, Emily Cable, Maxton Cable, Sadler Cable, and Charlotte Cable.
A memorial service will be held to honor his life at 11am Monday, November 26, 2012 at Macedonia United Methodist Church, 2700 Jones Franklin Rd, Cary, NC 27518. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 9-11 am prior to the service at the church.
