Gary was born in Blossburg, Pennsylvania on April 11, 1940 and was the son of the late Wayne and Maude Barr. After school, Gary joined the US Navy and served honorably in the 1960s. Gary was a humble man who worked hard all of his life. His primary career was as a body shop estimator, and he was sought after by many shops because of his honesty, integrity and tremendous expertise. In the last year he enjoyed working with his step-son in the office at Abbey Road Tavern & Grille in Cary.
Gary enjoyed music and was an accomplished musician, especially playing the guitar. He enjoyed going to concerts, particularly bluegrass, and attended Wide Open Bluegrass every year with friends. He especially enjoyed his furry friend Eddie, taking him on walks and to the dog park. Most of all he loved doing anything with his wife and family.
Gary Barr was a man of faith. He was kind and thoughtful, a wonderful husband, who loved family and friends. A quiet man of few words, when he spoke it was with kindness and love for people. He had a quiet smile that warmed anyone who was around him. Gary faced several health challenges over the years with courage and strength, never complaining and always thanking those who helped him. He loved his wife Dottie dearly, and they enjoyed 29 happy years together. He embraced everyone as family – and especially loved the family he gained when he married Dottie.
In addition to his wife, left to cherish his memory are his daughter Robbin and granddaughter Shayla and her husband Chace of South Carolina. He also loved Dottie’s family including daughter Kim Klaus and her husband Bob and children Sam and Elle; son Mike and Erin Montgomery and their children Jake and Olivia, and son Craig Montgomery and his children Angus and Maddox who live in Vermont. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law John and Mary Ellen Barr, sisters Delores Paddock and Carolyn Partridge, sister and brother-in-law Joanne and Chuck Martz, and sisters-in-law Sandy Barr and Barb Barr. He had many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him and miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Phillip, Keith and Dale, sister and brother-in-law Jane and Tom Wetmore, brother and sister-in-law Richard and Joyce Barr, brother-in-laws Spence Partridge and Ralph Paddock .
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Sunday, June 30 at 2:00 pm at Brown Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
