

Gerald was born on October 21, 1937 in Bridgeport, CT, to Frank Joseph and Josephine Myrtle Spencer Mongrain. He served in the United States Air Force for over 7 years where he trained for his career as an air traffic controller. He was subsequently employed by the Federal Aviation Administration at N.Y. Center, retiring in 1993 after 38 years. Gerald was an avid sailor and a member and past Commodore of the Sayville Yacht Club where he enjoyed competitive sailing. Later he found model sailboat racing, computerized flight simulation, and reading to be entertaining hobbies. He also spent many hours watching his grandchildren's sporting events.
Preceded in death by his parents, Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Elizabeth Mongrain of Cary, NC; daughter Suzanne Mongrain Neighbors (Joseph) of Morrisville, NC; son William Henry Mongrain, of Coconut Creek, FL; grandchildren Michael, Elizabeth, and Katherine Neighbors; and Nicole Mongrain; sisters Patricia Leahy (John) of Fairfield, CT; and Judith Boland-Caruso of Jupiter, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend gratitude to the many doctors and nurses who cared so compassionately for Gerald in his final years. Their efforts and kindness were a source of comfort for the family.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 5th, 2015, at 11:00 am at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel in Cary. Visitation will be on Friday, September 4th, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, also at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
