Hunter is survived by 2 sons, Hunter Hilton Tapscott and Alan Thomas Tapscott, who loved their father deeply and are grateful for the lessons of life and inspiration he gave them. We call him Dad. As an only child he received reluctant permission from his Parents, (especially his mom, Florence Payne Tapscott-Lady Tapscott), Dad enlisted at 17 years old into the U.S. Army Aircorp during World War II. One of the great pleasures Hunter had in his later years was wearing his B-29 Bomber hat while out with his sons and shaking the hand of children, women, men and fellow veterans who thanked him for his service. He especially enjoyed the children who came up to him.
Hunter graduated from the University of Virginia in the top ten percent of his class. He was recruited by Westinghouse Electric Corp. out of college and ended up working in their Raleigh meter plant as an engineer for 37 years. While that kind of career could define a man, our Dad was much more.
Hunter became a private pilot and ended up owning 2 airplanes, flying the family on vacations. Between work and play, Hunter visited all 50 states of the Union.
Dad was the leading bowler on a State Champion Bowling Team and our den was full of trophies he would bring home.
Dad took time out to be an actor and was in several plays at Raleigh Little Theater.
He was a traveler. He took his family all over the state of North Carolina and then to California, Canada, Florida. With his 3rd wife, Frances Batton Farrar, he continued his travels and took in China, Australia, Russia, London, Paris. He sailed with Alan in a US Navy warship from Canada to San Diego. Dad took his last cruise at 92 years old and he is reported to be the oldest man to float on an innertube down the James River in Virginia. Dad was known for his great singing and whistling ability. It was enjoyed by many up to his final days.
We understand that you are gone only in the physical way, Dad. In other ways, you are with us and always will be. You lived a wonderful life and inspired us to do the same. We will see you on the other side.
There will be a Memorial Service followed by reception at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607 on Saturday February 9th at 2pm.
Dad will be laid to rest at Monticello Memory Gardens on Saturday February 23rd at 1pm. 670 Thomas Jefferson Pkwy, Charlottesville, VA 22902. All are welcome for both ceremonies.
