James “Jim” L. Harvey born December 30th, 1943 – November 21st, 2019, passed away at the age of 75 after a five and a half year battle with cancer. Born in Pennsylvania and moving to South Florida as a child, Jim was well known for his dedication to his career and family. Jim graduated from Miami Norland Highschool and started a career in retail, with Burdines Department Store. Jim retired as Sr. Vice President of Burdines in 1990 (after 29 years of service to the company) and moved his family to Dublin, Ohio to take the position as President of Safelite Auto Glass. In 1995, Jim moved his family to Charlotte, NC where he later retired as the Executive Vice President of Operations for Belk Department Stores in 2009.
Jim was an intensely loyal family man. He married the love of his life, Judie, on Valentines Day in 1975 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They had two children, Jennifer and Justin. In 2013 Jim and Judie moved to Holly Springs, NC to be closer to their first grandchild.
Jim’s passion for golf was what defined him later in life. As a member of 12 Oaks Golf Club, you could find him on the golf course 4-5 times a week. He was a big jokester and trash talker on the course.
The only thing Jim loved more than golf was his family. He is survived by his wife, Judie Harvey, his daughter, Jennifer and husband Billy Mayo of Jacksonville, Florida, his son, Justin and wife Erin Harvey of Holly Springs, NC. He was Poppy to his grandchildren, Campbell and Jackson Harvey and was looking forward to the upcoming birth of Baby Mayo. Jim has one sister, Janine Harvey, of Hollywood, Florida and many other family members.
He is preceded in death by his Mother, Jean Harvey Petrucci and his father Neal Harvey.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Jim’s life being held on Saturday December 14th from 4-6PM at 12 Oaks Golf Club in Holly Springs, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in his name to Orphans Promise, C/O CBN, 977 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach, VA 23463, or online at www.orphanspromise.org/JimHarvey .
We would like to thank the countless number of Jim’s friends and family who have reached out over the past five and a half years to offer support. In particular, to Dr. Neal Ready, Jennifer Tenhover NP and Dr. David Yoo at the Duke Cancer Center.
