Meg passed away today from complications from Alzheimer's Disease at the Memory Care Unit at Woodland Terrace in Cary, NC. A native of Philadelphia, PA., Meg was predeceased by her parents, Edward Mergel, SR. and Irene Mergel and is survived by a brother, Ed as well as many wonderful cousins and her husband Matt, his family and our beloved dog Hazel as well as many friends. I (Matt) am writing this just as I got the call from Transitions Life Care that Meg passed. Meg and I were married for over 41 wonderful years, traveled the world, was my partner in everything we did as I was hers. Although she was not a soldier, she was a soldier's wife, which really is being a soldier as I moved up the ranks retiring as a colonel. We both worked for McDonald's Corporation in many capacities, and she served some time as the Executive Ad min for the CEO part of that time, always sought by the best because she was the best. Subsequently she worked for Phil Freelon, well known to those in this area, who we both loved.
Meg was involved with so many local groups including the North Carolina Symphony, the Military Officers Association of America, the Reserve Officers Association, the Second Infantry Division (Indianhead) Division Auxiliary, the Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary, Cha bad of Cary, the North Carolina Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, and the USO of North Carolina at RDU, all of which she dearly loved. She also published a children's book, "Harry the Inside Outside Cat". All of us will miss her more than words can ever say, but all of us are better for having had Meg in our lives, especially me!
Thanks to Transitions Life Care, Woodland Terrace and the Duke Health System, especially our Duke family Doctor, Dr. Hunter Holloway, and so many family members and friends supporting us through this 4 year journey!
Her burial and memorial service will be at a later time at Arlington National Cemetery. Rest in peace my darling until we meet again! We will love you forever. Donations in Meg's name can be made to the North Carolina Symphony, 3700 Glenwood Avenue, Ste 130, Raleigh, NC27612 or Chabad of Cary, 4104 Grace Park Drive, Morrisville, NC 27560 or Transitions Life Care, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
