

Margie Barnes McLawhorn passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026. Margie was born in Lumberton, N.C. on June 23, 1929 to the late Dewey Barnes and Lula West Barnes. She graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, N.C. Margie attended East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville, N.C. and also business school where she studied stenography and court reporting. She worked in the accounting office with the N.C. Dept. of Correction and retired with 33 years of service. Margie was a former member of the Cary Jaycees and Cary Garden Club. She was also active in the Cary Woman’s Club and was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Cary.
She was a devoted Christian and enjoyed doing for and taking care of others. Margie loved gardening and working in the yard, walking, reading, shopping, the Peddler Steakhouse, Saturday mornings at Bojangles with friends and traveling. After her retirement she was afforded the opportunity to travel to many different countries. Margie also enjoyed spending time at her beach condo in Atlantic Beach as well as annual trips to Hilton Head Island, S.C. Above all else, Margie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a devoted mother and dearly loved her two sons John and Gregg, and daughter-in-law Linda.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, J.D. McLawhorn Jr., and sisters Elise Sherrill and Annie Britt. She is survived by her sons, John (Linda) in Apex, N.C., and Gregg in Raleigh, N.C. Also, Kori Frazier (Zach) in San Antonio, Texas, and three great-grandsons Finn, Harry and Beau.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 12, from 10:30-11:45 followed by a memorial service at 12:00. A reception will be held immediately after the service with burial following at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens off Hwy. 70 in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan's Purse, Durham Rescue Mission or SPCA Wake County. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Rebecca Strother for her loving care as well as Heartland Hospice, Right at Home, and the staff at Woodland Terrace in Cary.
