The daughter of Lyle Pitzer McEwen and Lillie Lois Hawley McEwen, Marian was born in Miami, Florida, on August 23, 1926. She graduated from Miami Senior High School and graduated cum laude from the University of Miami. She returned to Miami High School to teach English there for ten years and later became English Department Chairman at Glades Junior High School in Miami until her retirement from teaching.
Marian was pre-deceased by her husband, Jesse Cleveland Hutchison, her parents, Lyle and Lois McEwen, and her brothers, Lyle P. McEwen, Jr. and William R. McEwen. She is survived by her sister, Rosemary McCurdy of Peoria, IL; her daughters and sons-in-law, Susan Lois Knox and Walker P. Knox of Raleigh, with whom she has made her home in recent years, and Julia (Jill) Smith and her husband Michael Smith of Lexington SC, and by her grandchildren Meredith Marian Humphrey of Stockholm, Sweden (Tore Kot); Laura Grey Humphrey of Chicago, IL (Logan Vanzura); Marcus Winfield Knox of Durham, NC; Avery Kathryn Knox of Durham, NC; Colin Michael Smith of Lexington, SC; and great granddaughters Florence Kot and Gwendolyn Kot of Stockholm, Sweden.
Marian/Mom/Nana was beloved by her entire family and known for her sharp intellect and her love of words, literature, poetry, English history and lifelong learning. She was kind to all, devoted and generous to her family, and always had a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen. Marian formed close connections to her many nieces and nephews and loved her siblings and parents deeply. She taught hundreds of students in Miami, many of whom continued to reach out to her throughout her life to tell her what an impact she had on them as their favorite teacher who inspired and encouraged them. Marian adored her Miami High School days as both teacher and student and her connection to that school meant the world to her. She loved Miami, had many friends there, and took advantage of all the things the city had to offer. She didn’t leave Miami until her 60’s, when she moved to SC, then NC, to be near her daughters and her grandchildren, who were so very important to her. Her family is so very grateful for her long, healthy life. She will be deeply missed by all of us. We were lucky to have her.
A celebration of Marian’s life will be planned in Columbia, SC in Feb or March. Please check back for more details. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in the name of Marian Hutchison to the Miami High School Alumni Association at https://miamihighschoolalumniassociation.com
