Nola Kay was the only child. Her parents taught her about the Lord and she learned the gospel. She was saved by Jesus. They loved to take vacations in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and it was a very small beach town at the time. Growing up she enjoyed going to school, cooking and sewing so much she decided to do that for a living. She met the man who would become her husband and father of her children while visiting her cousins in Vinton County, Ohio. She had recently gotten her driver’s license and borrowed her father’s 55 Buick and saw him playing softball. The next time she visited they had their first date.
She studied Home Economics at Marshall University where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. She married Harold Scott shortly after and began working at the Allensville School in Vinton County (near Chillicothe) with her husband. After a few years they decided to have children and moved to Cuyahoga Falls near Akron, Ohio where Harold began working for Revere Schools and she stayed home with her children. They took their firstborn son (Kevin) on a family vacation with her parents to Myrtle Beach when he was just 6 months old in that same 55 Buick that had become their family car. They went several more times. She took her children to the duck pond, read to them, cooked great meals, and even sewed their clothes. During this time her family of now four moved to Bath, Ohio. Once her youngest son began school she began working some at Stretch and Sew, which she enjoyed and bought fabrics to sew clothes for her family. After a few years Nola Kay resumed her teaching career at the same school as her husband, Revere High School. Her mother, Bonita, passed away suddenly right as her father, Roy, retired and they were leaving for vacation. Her children, Kevin and Brian were very young at the time. Nola Kay always wished that her mother could have seen her sons grow up.
She attended, and was an active member, of Graham Road Baptist Church, a Bible believing church, during this time she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and made sure her children knew the Lord through Jesus Christ. Her family of four had many wonderful vacation adventures including going twice on six week camping trips out west seeing the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, the California coast, the giant Sequoia trees, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Wall Drug, the Corn Palace, and Mount Rushmore. They also had vacation adventures seeing her father and his new wife, Francis in Orlando, Florida as well as going to Disney World multiple times. She loved to go on the rides with her children. The family also camped at Myrtle Beach when the kids were younger and then as they were older rented beach houses when they traveled to Myrtle Beach. She was happy that her father saw her boys grow up. Both of her sons graduated from the school where she taught with her husband. The summer after her oldest son graduated from college they rented a beach house in Myrtle Beach and her father was able to come. This vacation she would remember as soon her father would pass on to be with the Lord.
She and her husband retired just before her father passed away. They retired to Fairfield Glade, Tennessee were she had a wonderful house with a large kitchen where she loved to cook. She especially enjoyed when her kids and later Grandsons would come visit. She worked part time at Bon Worth where she loved their clothes. Then she worked for a little while teaching crafts to visitors with one of her friends. She especially enjoyed working with stained glass She arranged for her youngest son, Brian, to meet her friend’s daughter, Sue Carey, now Sue Scott, who would become the mother of her grandsons, Carson and Gabriel. With her husband she helped start a Bible believing church “on the glade” where they were both active, teaching the single’s group and singing in the ensemble during the service. She also hosted a woman’s Bible study during this time. She would read through and study the Bible. She had many good friends during this time. She and her husband began going to Myrtle Beach for the entire month of January and eventually bought timeshare from Wyndom where she loved to stay. They also went to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Dollywood where she enjoyed the Kingdom Heirs, a southern gospel group, Christmas lights, and help pick out a fancy dress for a child one of her sons watched, Bethanie. They went with their special church friends from Ohio, Sam and Joanne Gentile, to Williamsburg, Virginia, yearly for many years until Joanne wasn’t able to travel anymore. She collected Longaberger baskets by hosting basket parties. She really enjoyed this part of her life. They lived in Tennessee for 20 years.
Nola Kay had survived breast cancer by this time. She moved to Raleigh, North Carolina with her husband to spend more time with her Grandsons. They took the kids on all kinds of mini adventures, like berry picking, ice skating, bike riding and saw all of their sporting events (tons) that were within a two hour drive. She was able to celebrate their birthdays and Christmas. She even was able to walk them (especially the youngest) to the bus stop. She attended both her Grandsons high school graduations and saw them start college. She was able to get to know her Grandsons, especially during this time. They attended Colonial Baptist Church (now Shepherds Church) and became members and volunteered to help the membership (Greenhouse) class for several years. After Covid they attended virtually.
Nola Kay was always gentle, kind, appreciative, and happy. Kevin and Brian have been blessed to have Nola Kay Scott as their mother. She went on another vacation adventure to Myrtle Beach where she suddenly went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday January 18, 2024. We miss her.
