Robert John Condolff, a devoted husband, beloved father, proud World War II veteran, and accomplished engineer, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, at the age of 99, just 63 days shy of his 100th birthday. His long and remarkable life was defined by love, service, dedication, and quiet strength.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Ottilie Huether Condolff and their only daughter Victoria Condolff Bevenour, whom he adored and was his greatest pride. He was predeceased in death by his son-in-law Jerry Bevenour, whose company he treasured, especially during their friendly rounds of golf.
Born in 1925 in the Bronx, New York; he graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in St. Albans N.Y. in January 1943. He subsequently joined the US Navy in November 1943. Bob served his country with distinction during World War II as a member of a Navy photo unit. He flew reconnaissance missions over enemy territory, capturing images that played a crucial role in planning strategic military operations. His service was a source of quiet pride throughout his life.
After the war, he pursued his education at Pratt Institute in New York, earning a certificate in mechanical engineering. He went on to enjoy a 27-year career at the Grumman Aerospace Corporation, where he contributed significantly to the design of landing gear systems for then advanced military aircraft, including the F-111 and F-14.
In retirement Bob embraced his love of golf, regularly playing with a close-knit group of friends. He was instrumental in forming a golf club with his friends in his community at Fearrington Farm, following PGA rules and the handicap system. This was new and ground-breaking in the early 1980’s. Since they were schooled in the PGA rules, his club was invited to provide marshals for the first Par 3 hole in the SAS Tournament of the Senior PGA Champions at Prestonwood Country club in Cary N.C. In 2002, he and his wife moved to Carolina Meadows, as independent residents in Chapel Hill. At that time, this community was the only retirement village in the state with a golf course. Bob became involved with the golf group and shortly thereafter was asked to serve as the chairman for three years.
Bob will be remembered for his sharp mind, warmth, humility, and deep devotion to his family. He has been described by many as “a gentleman’s gentleman”, which is his legacy. Though he did not reach his 100th birthday, Bob filled his 99 years with a century of a full and meaningful life; leaving behind a heritage of love, service, and integrity.
Per his wishes, services will be delayed until his beloved wife Ottilie joins him and they can be honored and buried together. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
